Yikes. 90 day precipitation map: #Omaha (lots of eastern #Nebraska) still at 25-50% of normal rainfall. Trees are dying, it's a real bummer. https://www.weather.gov/images/gid/Precipitation/Nebraska_last90days_percent_of_normal.jpg

Ha. My big idiot dog is SUPER food motivated. Microwave some sausage, he loses his mind.

But I found a hack: a secret cloaking device: microwaving sausage and sauerkraut and mustard smells only like sauerkraut apparently. I'm eating a meal in peace. Alone. It's miraculous.

So, what's the worst thing for which you ever got in trouble?

When I was 10 years old (1974), my buddy Craig (9) and I caused a very minor international incident because we got on the wrong subway train in West Berlin and wound up in Soviet-controlled communist /EAST/ Berlin. As a result, Major Dad (USAF), his boss (Craig's LTC Dad), their boss, AND the base commander all had to put on their fancy-dress uniforms to retrieve us.

I spent the rest of the summer on HOME CONFINEMENT.

TOP THAT! 🤣🤪

deafferret,

@JRBuckley I didn't get in trouble, but I thought I was going to:

~20 years ago I worked as a programmer. The billionaire's pilot called me and asked if I could write a program to book a landing slot for his private jet into a ski resort town in Colorado. I was replacing his secretary / a room full of data entry employees who were failing while furiously clicking Reload / Submit.

The project escalated, I ended up with ~200 robot servers hammering an FAA page to reserve his landing time. It worked extremely well.

Everything was going great until one day my robot army booked an entire airport solid for 24 hours, his 1 jet landing every 15 minutes.

I manually cancelled 94 errant reservations and hoped no one noticed. Apparently, no one did.

Soon thereafter the FAA implemented anti-automation measures and policies on their cheesy little website and my project was retired.

The Bouldin case: We seize your $18K in cash, or we arrest you. Arrest him for what, exactly? Following too closely? That's not sufficient for arrest, is it?

> Be charged with two felonies
Which two felonies?

> The Seward County deputies didn’t arrest him, as they had said they would. But they did seize his cash while charging him with a misdemeanor for possessing drug money – charges that were later dropped.
wut??

deafferret,

@gizmomathboy I read somewhere a year ago or something that cops are now CAF-ing MORE money from citizens than citizens are stealing from each other. Mind boggling.

Admins are busy pre-blocking Meta servers / domains. That’s cool.

Meanwhile is there a functional Masto Meta server I can create a separate account on to scroll through my Facebook-only friends feeds? I assume it’ll be an ad ridden hellscape and I’ll give up on it fairly quickly, but it’d be an interesting experiment. Googling, the answer seems to be no, none of that actually exists yet?

deafferret,

@gizmomathboy It would be interesting to play around with. I'm game.

deafferret,

@gizmomathboy ya, I'm really curious about integration to walled gardens.

I'm guessing the reasons I rarely use Facebook would quickly(?) become the reasons I would rarely use such a thing. But it would be an interesting series of experiments / discoveries.

Wanted: search engine that only returns results that aren’t paywalled / hostile to ad blockers.

Jim Cramer maybe one of the greatest people to be interviewed by Conan O’Brien. He puts it all out on the floor, and he just doesn’t care. Look on YouTube.

You can agree or disagree with him. But the sincerity is written on his face. I don’t always agree. But I can’t fault someone for being deliberate.

deafferret,

@vigilant 2006? 2008? Other?

deafferret,

@vigilant I was trying to figure out which interview you were referring to. This one? https://youtu.be/g4rWfy7LCV4
What are you up to nowadays?

deafferret,

@vigilant good luck with the search! My buddy is down in Austin I need to go pester him this winter in the RV. :) You in ~Dallas?

That feeling when you send a text to friend wishing them a happy birthday, and they respond with "Thanks, how are you doing?” and you don't want to respond because it's too sad for their birthday.

deafferret,

@rrwo maybe supporting their friend when they need it is the best, most fulfilling opportunity in their otherwise bland birthday?

Checks out.

deafferret,

. @davidaugust our neighbor's champion Whippet escaped last week and ended up with us for a couple hours. Sweetest dog.

Our huge idiot, of course, could not calm down long enough to make a new friend. He wants to be friends SO BADLY that he usually doesn't get the chance. Huey needs to dial it back like 90%. :)

Interesting. UFOlogists convinced the government has been running coverups (of alien life) for decades. Mick West (debunker) agrees there are coverups -- probably of retrieval of Soviet / Chinese / etc craft, which is all classified.

So this deadlock will continue forever. Because the military can't
come out and say what they're actually doing. Neither can Congress. So the conspiracy theories will never resolve. Need a game theory solution for this one too, apparently. :)

I just got sent a job posting for a backend role that's all Perl. It's got to be a typo, right? Otherwise maybe I should send this over to @deafferret.

deafferret,

@gabek Golang has some neat tricks, but it's drudgery. Perl was fun. :)

I could not for the life of me remember for the ENTIRE MORNING whether I had taken my Vyvanse or not. Now that it’s 2:07pm and I’ve spent most of the day doing fuck-all, I think I know what the answer to my question might be.

deafferret,

@chozari I have a little plastic daily pills thing. So I always know if I took ‘em or not with zero stress. 🙂

174 AQI Unhealthy
Good morning from Queens, NY. This may be the worst air quality I've ever seen? And I saw some doozy days in Shanghai years ago. 🌲🔥🇨🇦🇺🇸

deafferret, to random

Dunno how common this is, but NYC air quality is really bad currently. Haziest skyline I've seen in years.

deafferret,

Canada is on fire apparently.
