Another fun vocab discovery today

“云雨”,“风花雪月”or“风月”

  1. 云雨 (yún yǔ)
  • Translation: "Clouds and rain."
  1. 风花雪月 (fēng huā xuě yuè)
    Wind, flowers, snow and moon

  2. 风月 (fēng yuè)

  • Translation: "Wind and moon."

Yea they mean sexual/romantic activity or feelings.

Leave it to the Chinese to use small talk about the weather to talk about 👩‍❤️‍💋‍👨

😆

@voyager@hachyderm.io avatar

@liztai 風花雪月 (I use trad Chinese btw) is a very famous Japanese video game😂

There’s a Chinese idiom “只談風月” (we only talk about wind and moon), means they only want chit-chat, not politics, not deep talk, not anything serious

I've been using https://thenewsintwos.app/ for about two years and its a great no-cost app to add to a language learning toolkit to consume more in your target language. I only use the web version and I don't bother with its language plans, but its by line or word translation reveal in feed is slick. It sources Newser, which is not bad, but it'd be neat to have the functionality built into a feed reader - please let me know if that's already a thing.

@timesandseasons@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@Neblib That looks like a good resource! My local Telemundo station puts their articles in an RSS feed, and I find reading that to be quite helpful.

My father is staying with us, I’m taking care of him until Wednesday.

Work is busy, I’ve got a ton to do.

The kids just started summer break, I’m trying to spend as much time with them as I can.

I’m cooking, cleaning, fixing things.

Me: I should study some

But I’ll get there. It’s a beautiful language. :)

Cantonese use one word to make everything sound like a cuss.

For real my favourite Canto words at one time was "sei pat poh" cos I watched way too much TVB and Stephen Chow movies then 😆

voyager,
@voyager@hachyderm.io avatar

@liztai “sei pat poh” is too dramatic and “puk gai” (bastard) is more common in daily life :blobfoxlul: it can even be used in jokes between fds to mock each other

Speaking of this, I can’t believe I found this in Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cantonese_profanity

Guest Cantonese really takes curses into another level lol

Since it came up several times at #pyconus, I thought I’d post here. The method I’ve been using to learn Spanish (and liking quite a bit), is Comprehensible Input.

A good starting point for finding information about CI, and finding materials in your target language is Compehensible Input Wiki

For Spanish, I started with Dreaming Spanish

I could use some more suggestions for improving my #Italian : What #comics written by Italian authors do you recommend?

They should be reasonably popular so that I can get them in Germany without too much hassle.

@juergen_hubert always found Asterix great for language learning #Asterix

juergen_hubert,
@juergen_hubert@thefolklore.cafe avatar

@wolfofthewisp Yes, but that was written by French authors. I'd prefer a comic written by a native Italian speaker.
