The last book I got from the library was a $50 hardcover and the book I got today is a $10 paperback, and I'm noticing the difference in quality enough that it's distracting.

Someone was going around knocking on doors for a county council candidate. Totally normal except she's running unopposed in the primary, so her election isn't until November. Anyways we were affable and made sure that the stumper knew we were very displeased with the freeway being built a half-mile away.

Me biking down the hill to the store: there's no rush and it's hot so I'm not going to push myself

Strava: you got 3 segment PRs and a bunch of silvers

Seen at the pride parade this weekend. I'd say this is the only valid use for one of these, but another float was towed by a F-150 Lightning, so this nightclub doesn't get credit.

I've been using https://thenewsintwos.app/ for about two years and its a great no-cost app to add to a language learning toolkit to consume more in your target language. I only use the web version and I don't bother with its language plans, but its by line or word translation reveal in feed is slick. It sources Newser, which is not bad, but it'd be neat to have the functionality built into a feed reader - please let me know if that's already a thing.

@Neblib That looks like a good resource! My local Telemundo station puts their articles in an RSS feed, and I find reading that to be quite helpful.

I wish we had a common, shorthand way to describe the movement to increase street safety, walking, cycling, mass transit use/availability, and density. Political polls often ask what issues matter most to you, but we don't have a common way to describe it to pollsters, so its popularity never gets detected.

The @sltrib did the thing where they write a story on some quality-of-life report but didn't actually examine what the report was promoting. It was some nature score that gives full marks to the urban-wildland interface and low marks to anything actually urban. Like the neighborhood I'm in is high-density suburban (by US standards) and full to the brim with public green space and natural areas, and it gets a score of 40%. A rich neighborhood with no green but street trees gets 97%.

What if we deliberately poisoned the well by posting predictive text spam every once in a while?

That was the last thing you were saying to the other guy and I thought he said that I would be there in the afternoon but he was in a good place for me and he was in a good place and he said it would have to go through it to me but he was not able and he said it would have to go through it to the office to get the other stuff done but he was in a good way and I didn't think it would have been a

@Legit_Spaghetti That's been a game on social media like Reddit and Tumblr for a while, but I don't know how to do it in a place that the consensus is to use it was a cultural thing, and that's a lot of fun to do it in the past to the store, and they are so good to know how to get to. Fruit and I think it'd be neat.

A historic building in town was up for sale with the mysterious condition that the building be destroyed. The seller couldn't find anyone willing to act on that condition, so they were making plans to demolish it themselves. Before they could organize that, it burned to the ground in the night. Probably just kids doing arson, but still strange.

@AwoogaGeneral There's somebody locally running for office that has the last name "Kennedy", and it throws me for a loop every time I see one of their signs. Mike Kennedy is still a twat though so I think no better of anyone who supports him than anyone who supports RFK.

While is down, I tried out a few other search engines. I did a search I made yesterday in each. gave me an interesting looking blog first, then some less-related info from high-trust sources, then an interesting paper, then a bunch of garbage. gave me nothing that looked interesting, just pages that used some of the words from my search. gave me the less-related high-trust sources first, then the entire rest of the first page looked interesting.

@Mojeek I was searching "history of English in Estonia" after being curious why a film made in Estonia was in English. The search gave me a bunch of histories of Estonia, which would make sense if the search is keyword based but wasn't useful. Perhaps if I were to be a consistent Mojeek user, I'd become used to avoiding words like "history" that would bring up a bunch of uninteresting results.

New video! Cities these days are on wildly different growth trajectories, but sports teams are often still distributed like it’s 1950. So today I do some reallocating. (Not the Cubs though, honest.) Already up on Nebula for those who partake! https://nebula.tv/videos/citynerd-i-relocated-10-teams-that-deserve-it-but-not-the-cubs

@nerd4cities "Salt Lake City metro area, 1.3 million people. They got [NBA, MLS, and NHL]. Make it make sense."

The Wasatch Front is divided into 3 MSAs despite really just being one urban area well-connected by FrontRunner and I-15. There's 2.8 million people for pro-sports teams to attract as an audience, and the region is rapidly growing. The powers that be also want MLB to join the party :)
