I am reminded that on average, a native English speaker can learn 4 Category 1 languages in the time it would take to learn 1 Category 5 language like Japanese.

Or 2 Category 1 languages plus German and it would still take longer for that native English speaker to learn Japanese, Chinese, Korean, or Arabic.

Given the amount of time it took me to be as fluent in Japanese as I am, it's really something I think gets glossed over too often.

Here is another take on essential functions we would like to implement in #PwG platform. Now, I kindly ask you, what (if any) application(s) would you suggest for such installation. We strongly prefer #FOSS, #docker and #multilingual (hopefully with #Polish version ready). Questions and comments welcome. More details about PwG project: tepewu.pl/en/kat/pwg/

I'm going mad. Is there a simple solution to creating a small e-commerce website? With you're paying for multiple premium plugins and it's just bonkers. It's like being caught in a web.

Haven't looked at or really. Ideas?

Edit: it's the multilingual stuff that is making it a headache.

#e-commerce

cyberia,

@davep @Extelec Let's face it: multilingualism isn't the brightest side of #WordPress. Not yet anyway, since it's on the roadmap and hopefully things will change within 2025 https://wordpress.org/about/roadmap/
Otherwise, I don't have much experience with #multilingual stores, but the multisite approach suggested by the Woo article you linked is an overkill solution in my opinion and of course creates sync issues, etc.

Super proud that my article "The Multilingual Tapestry of King Alfred Fanfiction" was published in Etudes Médiévales Anglaises (ÉMA, ISSN : 0240-8805). 🥳

It's the first scholarly paper for which I translated from several Asian languages, so a personal milestone. With many thanks to my friends from @japanfans and the Japans Cultureel Centrum Utrecht for their help. You make me happy. 🥰

I'm writing my small #staticgen at https://alxd.org/ but I'm seeing the limitations of my half-custom theme and Pelican engine.

Is there value to tags? A search function? #noJS ?

Is it better to have a homepage in one language? All languages? Dependent on user browser? Should un-translated posts show up in other langs?

Since my last #MacOS update (14.0), I can no longer switch between languages when I am dictating. I used to be able to call up the dictation function and simply click on the microphone to toggle between the three languages for which I have the dictation function set up. Now, it's a blue icon that says "EN" and I can't seem to change it to my other languages. Any tips?! #multilingual #accessibility

I love all the diversity and representation in Star Trek! It's fun watching bigots squirm. I'd much rather they reflect on their bigoted opinions, and strive to better themselves. But if they refuse to do that, then watching them squirm is the next best thing. #StarTrek

Yes @peregrine57, I am always amused when people ask when #StarTrek went #woke, seemingly unaware the 1965 pilot featured female first officer #NumberOne in command while rescuing her captain. This swiftly followed by an Asian #astrophysicist and navigator in #Sulu, a professional Black woman in #Uhura who is not only #multilingual but both a capable #electronics technician and #starship #pilot, and Black #physician #MBenga who is well versed in multispecies #medicine. #IDIC #diversity

George Takei appears as an Asian astrophysicist in an early Star Trek episode.
Nichelle Nichols appears as Black communications officer Uhura in an early Star Trek episode, as Vulcan science officer Spock looks on, played by Leonard Nimoy.
Booker Bradshaw plays Black physician Joeseph M'Benga in an episode of Star Trek.

I just read this fascinating article and it got me thinking.

I speak decent Japanese, but not native level. I find that I’m more gullible in Japanese than I am in English, which I think might be because I have fewer resources for second-order thinking (above simply comprehending). My personality also changes a bit.

Wondering: what have other #bilingual and #multilingual people noticed about differences between their languages?

Google shared how they handle multilingual searches and I'm still not amused.

"[...] Google Search considers all these settings and other factors to automatically determine what languages would be most helpful to show results in."

Well, the combination of languages between my devices and browsers is English and Czech. Whenever I make a search in Czech in the UK, 80% of the results are in Polish, 10% in Slovak, and the remaining 10% in Czech.

    Not great. 🤷‍♂️😂

Reminder that there's more than one reason to state your pronouns:

It's not always obvious which ones "normally" go with a name.
Some names are commonly used with both/all genders (e.g. Alex, Sandy).

People not fluent with your language may not (yet) have learnt which pronouns typically go with which names.
I've stared in mild panic at many Hindi and Japanese names in work emails, knowing I need to respond to them and having no idea how to address them.

Some names (e.g, Andrea, Nicola) are associated with different pronouns in different languages, and that context isn't always available.

Many people just want to address you correctly, and they know some people respond very badly to mistakes.
Helping them out is the other reason I always specify mine.

I'd like to see this reasoning become more common, in parallel with the better-known gender-identity variety.

I just read about the #Fosstodon drama and I find myself a bit bemused.

I'm #multilingual, and multi-accental as well, I am a dual #citizen by birthright, I grew up in a multilingual household in a multilingual and multi #ethnic family, and I grew up with #racism from outsiders and as a kid I was jealous of people who only spoke #English at home...

What I'd like to know is, have any of the people banning other #languages ever actually encountered other human beings?

    Because, y'know, we exist.

"Linguistically inclusive policies come in many forms, and can be implemented at each stage of the editorial process. They might aim to make publishing more #multilingual. Alternatively – if sticking with English – they may aim to reduce the burden on non-native English speakers."
