#AI and #MachineLearning models are shifting a number of core assumptions on which the various Web stakeholders have been relying on for years.
In this presentation at the @w3c member meeting in #Hiroshima 🇯🇵, @dontcallmeDOM reviews the systemic impact and possible mitigation the Web community should consider to ensure the long term prosperity of the #Web in the face of these changes.

#Privacy and #security, fundamental to #HumanRights and civil liberties, have always been key W3C agenda items.

At the recent @w3c member meeting in Hiroshima 🇯🇵, @simone - new W3C Security Lead - outlined a three-pillar approach to security: developing security standards, verifying those standards, and guiding #developers to create a secure web.

A long overdue standard has now been published at W3C: "RDF Dataset Canonicalization". Essential for security related operations with RDF Datasets...

Note that the standard is published alongside 8 full implementations, which is great.

The current frequency of language usage on the Web (e.g. 52% of websites in English) doesn't reflect the diverse cultural and linguistic needs essential for global access, highlighting the importance of internationalization (i18n).

Fuqiao Xue, @w3c i18n activity lead, gave a comprehensive report of past and future @webi18n work, collaborating with spec and #browser #developers to address gaps, particularly for endangered scripts and #languages.

Internationalization is making the World Wide Web worldwide. Fuqiao Xue has taken over as W3C Internationalization Lead, while Richard Ishida has transitioned to semi-retirement and will focus on Language Enablement.

Fuqiao notes: "Languages are more than just a means of communication. They are vessels of culture, carrying with them traditions, stories, knowledge, and ways of understanding the world that have been passed down through generations."

Acking the challenges face due to the growing complexity of web , participants explored three crucial themes:

  • supply chain security
  • JavaScript security
  • developer awareness

Along with an emphasis on documentation (tutorials, best practices, etc.), the key workshop outcomes are:

  • #SBOM can aid in tracking #security vulnerabilities
  • Source Code Transparency proposal could validate application resources
  • #JavaScript execution could be split in Compartments to isolate third-party code
  • Same origin realms manipulation concerns need to be addressed
  • Deprecation of third-party #cookies presents an opportunity to enhance web cookie model security
w3cdevs,
@w3cdevs@w3c.social avatar

One next step is to initiate a holistic security approach activity, possibly within a @w3c #CommunityGroup
