“A predator, such as a #shark, may perceive it as hearing a lone fish instead of a group,” Mittal said. “This could have significant implications for prey fish.” #biology #science https://c.im/@jake4480/112266505244738496

Human fear of sharks has deep roots, as early as the eighth century B.C.E. – and the book (published 50 years ago) and then movie "Jaws" terrified the public. However, it brought shark research into the scientific mainstream.
Some numbers to set the record straight:
🦈 64: 5-year global average of shark bites
🦈 You're 200x more likely to drown than to die from a shark bite
🦈 548 known shark species - only 13 have bitten humans

Unveiling the Mysteries: New Insights on Why Marine Predators Dive Into the Dark, Deep Sea
New research using electronic tags and sonar data shows that large #marine predators like #sharks and #tuna often dive into deep #mesopelagic zone, interacting with its dense layer of organisms for feeding and possibly other purposes. This zone is crucial for both ecological balance and commercial fishing, requiring careful study and conservation to prevent irreversible damage https://scitechdaily.com/unveiling-the-mysteries-new-insights-on-why-marine-predators-dive-into-the-dark-deep-sea/ #whoi
