Any ragtime enjoyers here? I wrote some pieces in an attempt to learn ragtime and I'd love some feedback.

The first is simply titled "Testing Rag" because that's what I was doing.

Quick introduction now that I've moved to Mastodon Music.

Swiss-based musician - bass, guitar, key, vocals of varying competencies. Played in Sydney in the 80s, Brisbane in the 90s, Myspace in the 00s + a rogue folk-acoustic set somewhere in there, nothing at all in the 10s!, and now active again. Several solo, collaborative and band activities locally and in Australia.

Also trying to recover all my old friends after the unexpected move, so boosts appreciated.

Help Mastodon, I'm lost !

I'm looking for a alternative to Confluence to store my team documentation.

My short list today is
@dokuwiki
@xwikiorg
@ngpixel (Wiki.js) and
@MkDocs

What are you using ? What would you recommend ?

Boost would be appreciated. Thanks ! 🙂

pwaring,
@pwaring@fosstodon.org avatar

@vdaron I use Google Docs because it's easy to collaborate and I can keep a local copy (using rclone) in case Google ever deletes my account.

In the past I've used Mediawiki, which was a reasonable self-hosted option and had useful plugins, e.g. we could put it behind LDAP authentication.

Dear fellow musicians!

I created a Ko-fi commission for the less techy who need help to set up a Faircamp page 🙃

50% of the total income will be donated to the Faircamp project itself, which I thank once again for existing in the first place 🙏🏻😄

Hopefully helpful for somebody!

You can find it here: https://ko-fi.com/c/5d8a5abb3b

HEY! Check out this update to my #Emissary demo I posted a couple weeks ago:

https://kumi.tube/w/pmqy4eUy6iz88Z6Rh1cM5K

We're working to make a #Federated alternative to #Bandcamp where up and coming bands can connect with fans and share their music on the Fediverse.

The progress is really encouraging, so it's time to get some feedback from real #musicians

My goal is to have something you could actually use in the next month or two. So please get your ideas in so's I can squeeze them into my launch calendar.

benpate,
@benpate@mastodon.social avatar

I owe you all some links:

I'm building all of this in the open on GitHub.So I'd love to collect suggestions as GitHub issues, if you're able to post there:

https://github.com/EmissarySocial/app-planetary/issues

But, if you're not a software nerd like me, just send me a reply to this thread (or as a DM) and I'll do the rest.

Sharing, Directories, and Discovery are important parts to this, but I still have to build those out. LMK if you have thoughts/feelings about how that should look, too.

🤘

setto,

@benpate
Here's my dream. It's probably of the chart and i do not intend to write this as any form of expectation or judgement.

My ideal #fediverse #music services has #p2p streaming. This is to unburden my smol server from the unlikely yet secretly desired organic DDOS generated by that killer track everyone suddenly understood.

Of course, every #track is a post, with description, eventual lyrics and individual cover-art. Albums are individual posts too. They are basically digests with a bunch of tracks attached, linking to each track's independent post. They have an individual album art and description of what they represent or conceptualize.

This dream service would be entirely interoperable with #peertube. (Although i suspect this would require some sort of collaboration with peertube since i think audio only entities on peertube are in mp4 format.)

My dream service defaults to disregard the notion of me becoming some sort of recruiting agent for big tech record-distribution companies like Spatify, iFumes, etc... It can optionally be that for those who don't have the strength to stand up against the big-tech narrative, but primarily it would operate much like Faircamp does, by encouraging the audience to chip in directly on the spot with donation funnels on the site and donation links in the fedi-posts body.

My dream service leverages activitypub groups, in similar way that lemmy and peertube does. This is to allow artist with many different projects to create different "channels" representing the difference between their various ventures. This could also be used by labels to create different "channels" for different artists. Multiple users can curate one or several of these channels.

I might have more ideas coming after another cup of java. But this is my input for now. Take it as it is: a dream, by a derp. An enthusiastic and encouraging one though! What you do is great, regardless how close or far off my lil' dream it ends up being!

Hack the planet! :cyber_heart_sparkle_purple:

As a 10-year veteran of #remote #collaboration, when COVID-19 struck and everybody went remote, I thought that this would invalidate my USP, my key differentiator.
Boy was I wrong.
After three years of remote work my assumption was that everyone would have learned to excel remotely. I was wrong. So so wrong.
I think a part of the exec's hard push for #RTO is the understanding that many organisations' 'remote culture' was just lipstick on the pig of their in-office culture.

@LucaManciniDrummer @meljoann is there a link to this guide? The last few times I looked into it I decided I was not up to the task but maybe this guide is what it's going to take to get me over the top... Or I'll decide I'm still not up to it, but we'll get a little closer for next time.

Fellow , who's got something recent they would like to have some ears on? Or something ancient that never got its due and needs another chance to be heard? Or something in the middle even?

Send me a song or a few, totaling 15 minutes or less, and I'll give them a listen and a writeup, here and on my blog.

There's a catch: we gotta be mutuals* here or elsewhere (or you can subscribe to the newsletter that all of these little reaction write ups go in).

Any and all genres and styles are welcome; I'm an adventurous listener and not afraid to venture outside of my typical listening habits.

That said, there's stuff I know really well and stuff I know not well at all, so I'm going to have more insightful things to say and/or just more to say period about genres/styles I know. No escaping that ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Not only do I offer #musicians, #SoundDesigners and #SoundArtists the service of putting their #digital sounds thru real #analog tape for a little character glow up (see my pinned post for details), I also go the other way! Meaning, if you have an old tape recording on nearly any format (cassette, microcassete, 1/4" stereo or mono open reel, multitrack cassette) that you need to digitize, I can do that for you! High quality transfers for $15/per 45 minutes for most formats!

etherdiver,
@etherdiver@ravenation.club avatar

Rescue those old band recordings, lost interviews or the final recording of a loved one's voice! Make that "Best Mix Tape Ever!" live again! Laugh again at the dumbass recording you made at a slumber party in 8th grade!

If you're interested, reach out for more details and by all means, tell your analog friends and #boost the original post to extend its reach.

*Slightly higher cost for reel to reel and multitrack cassette transfers due to more setup and/or time involved.

kevin,
@kevin@dice.camp avatar

@etherdiver I have a demo cassette of a local band from the 90s I would like to digitize. Haven't seen any mention of it online in my searches.

mirlo,
@mirlo@musician.social avatar

, what are your best practices for breaking through the saturation that is pervasive on many platforms and ensuring your music is heard by your audience?

turbobob,
@turbobob@mamot.fr avatar

@mirlo Share your music & embrace it. A great example is Baron Crâne. From the start, they fully shared their first album (still their best imo) as freely as can be: streaming, download in all formats incl. FLAC, you name it. People got excited, and shared it even further for them. They certainly got to play many more concerts thanks to this open attitude, become more known, play more etc

In stark comparison, some bands only share a few of their songs for streaming. Or even only short excerpts.

"The tools of online collaboration are still relatively primitive and often discouragingly awkward. But they’re improving, and I’m seeing glimmerings of hope that in a few years we’ll have vastly more capable systems. That’s particularly important because without better collaboration tools, we won’t be able to take advantage of the ways in which e-books can be truly superior to traditional print."

  • Poetica was acquired;

"The Poetica system will be integrated into Condé Nast’s proprietary content management platform"

  • Sigil is still releasing new versions;

  • Wikipedia has WikiBooks, which Dan doesn't mention by name, although it existed since 2003;

  • GitHub was acquired by BorgSoft and is being rapidly enshittified

Of the tools Dan mentions in his 2013 article on collaborative writing (#2);

  • PenFlip appears to be dead, as does the homepage of the creator;

https://madebyloren.com/

Which is really unfortunate. This project showed a lot of promise, and because is was proprietary, there's no published source code a community project could be built around to continue it.
