Yesterday Elon Musk told advertisers to go fuck themselves and threatened to send his mob after them if they pull their ads from Twitter/X.

Over the years, he built a reality where he was a genius who could never be wrong. But as his fantasy collides with the real world, Musk is melting down — and has the power to make us all feel the pain as he crashes back to Earth.

I'm not sure that moving to modern systems improves reliability.
Here the railways have largely centralised signals controls, rather than using localised automata.
This means that a cut fibre, routing, or power problem at any of the many single points of failure regularly knocks out rail services to entire regions rather than the simple local faults of yore.

Regular reminder that if you are giving someone feedback on their work, be kind and try to find at least one positive thing to tell them about it. That goes for trainees, authors of manuscripts you are reviewing, and even senior colleagues you think probably don't need a pat on the back. @academicchatter

Board I've been waiting on for a while finally came in.

This is my experiment at (possibly) moving away from the Vishay HML series axial lead resistors as probe tips, in favor of something with an easier supply chain and potentially even better performance.

HML for scale on top of the PCB.

zl2tod,
@zl2tod@mastodon.online avatar

@azonenberg
Any scraps of double sided FR4 lying around?
A 50Ω a transmission line on 1/16" double sided PCB is about 0.1" wide.
Butt it up to the edge of the existing and use foil to bridge the gaps.
Then one probe wire from each side of the PCB.
Weird how all that stuff came out in furlongs per fortnight.

zl2tod,
@zl2tod@mastodon.online avatar

@azonenberg
Fair enough.
Thought about cutting the existing track and dropping the resistor there?

zl2tod,
@zl2tod@mastodon.online avatar

@azonenberg
Just looking at the earth probe wire: I pick it's about 10mm long so it's a 1/4λ at around 7.5GHz, and it's quite inductive being a thin round wire. My instinct would be to put a piece of thin wall brass modellers tube around the axial resistor for the earth return.

I bought some 5 year old, used large industrial power supplies for an upcoming project. Before turning them on, I decided to open them up to check for any loose parts. As I found out, these have a rather neat internal design. Like in any large power supply, they have an APFC circuit that feeds a couple hundred volt DC bus, which is then chopped and put through a chonky flyback transformer, whose output is then smoothed with an LC network. I don't know what this means for code improvements over time. People tend libraries; they upgrade their code. AI doesn't make similar improvements - or at least, it's not clear that it does. #AI https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2023/11/20/a-coder-considers-the-waning-days-of-the-craft?utm_source=werd.io&utm_campaign=mastodon&utm_channel=mastodon

Interesting explanation about what really went wrong with Optus last week.

The short version: it looks like Optus doesn't control its own core network. Its parent company Singapore Telecom does. Optus just resells it.

Which is why Optis' CEO was so vague about what the issue actually was: she was protecting her bosses in Singapore.

    Another Earth directed CME is predicted to arrive on 11Nov2023 at 1800GMT. That's 12Nov2023 7:00am in New Zealand so possibly no good for us.
    The modelled prediction for the 5Nov2023 CME arrival significantly underestimated the speed such that CME arrived during NZ darkness triggering a display seen across much of the country and in high latitude areas around the world over the next 24 hours.
    The current prediction shows a less intense impact, but ...
