I don’t want to freak anyone out but I don’t think I will ever be done doing the dishes. It’s almost like a person or persons unknown keep making dirty ones 😡

I learned from Wikipedia that Northeastern University used to be called the Northeastern used to be called the Evening Institute for Younger Men.

Inspired by this fact I would like to propose an Afternoon Institute for Middle-Aged People.

Mostly we would just nap.

Little known fact: SkyZone was actually financed by an anti-parent shadow cabal of 7-year-olds.

jpeelle,

@jonny I’m down with that

In the past when I've done correlations between many (10,000s) of values, I've done this sort of histogrammy approach. Does anyone know

  1. Is there a real name for this kind of plot? and

  2. Is there an R function/package that makes this easy?

My initial searches haven't turned up anything although I swear I found something relevant in the past… @rstats

No one in my lab has ever heard of "version control” so I'm making it my mission to educate them. Does anyone have suggested resources for beginners?

jpeelle,

@freemo I love that idea!

“You don’t smell stinky! You smell really great!” - great praise from a 4-year-old

Follow these two easy steps to get rich

  1. Offer a babysitting service that’s exclusively between dinner and story time

  2. Think of a big number and then charge triple that

Have just used my 24 years of experience doing research in this field to fix a technical problem in a study.

(I restarted the computer and everything just worked.)

It's called "parental leave" not "worky work time". If you have a colleague going on parental leave please do not ask them to do stuff while they are on leave. LEAVE them alone and let them enjoy their new child and/or sleep or just take a breath.

Today I'm facilitating the first in a series of grantwriting sessions for junior faculty in my department. The goal is for each of them to submit an NIH grant on a new topic in February 2025—so lots of time for planning, writing, feedback, preliminary data, etc. Sessions are designed to give us all time to write and also get feedback from guest speakers. Wish us luck! #NIHgrants

The cleaners in my building who no doubt are very well-intentioned erased all of my white boards and I am alternating laughing and crying

Nothing too serious was lost but also 😱

In my experience the path from an Accepted Stage 1 Registered Report to the final paper is long and winding. "Just do what we said we'd do" takes longer than you think! I still see the merits in many cases but also I am not jumping to do this again (especially for student projects).

If, like me, you need some extra encouragement to say "no" to demands on your time, maybe a little punchcard will help? Say no 10 times, treat yourself.

For more discussion see episode 5 of my favorite podcast: http://www.juiceandsqueeze.net/5

If you want one of these for yourself, send me your mailing address (e.g., via email) and I'll pop one in the mail.

A transit app, but in addition to telling you when trains and buses are coming it also lets everyone using the app complain about the sad state of public transportation and the lack of funding for infrastructure.

This brainstorm may or may not be brought to you by yet another delayed train 🚂

I'm having a tough time finding reviewers for a paper but I realized it's almost February...and thus nearly time to re-contact all those people who declined earlier this month saying "no time this month". HOW ABOUT NOW?????? 😬

Happy Monday! What would be the most boring TV shows about academia/research? Current top contender:

IRB Philadelphia

I have a corneal abrasion due to an accidental poke in the eye from a child (oops). On the plus side my urgent care visit gave me an image for the cover of my next album.

I mean if I had a band…

jpeelle,

@jonny Amazing ❤️

Somehow I agreed to take a dunk in the ocean in February (!!) to help raise money for my kids’ school. If you would like to offer your moral or financial support I would be grateful. In return I will share pictures of me looking ridiculous... 🥶

I just sent my first "I don't want to meddle but..." email to my daughter's 1st grade teacher 😬

jpeelle,

@jonny Thanks! I think it was fine. We love her teacher, I just want harder reading assignments for take-home reading. Hopefully it's a reasonable request. 🤷‍♂️ (She's on level G and I KNOW FOR A FACT the levels go up through M, so I don't think I'm making more work for anyone.)

Also as a professor if I ever got one of these emails from a parent I would probably lose it

The 2FA business is getting totally out of hand—I just had to get a text code to log in to my Dunkin' Donuts account

Speaking of out of hand, I guess I've reached the point where I have an account at Dunkin' Donuts
