@mima

This situation has proven that we need to rethink how we divide provinces into regions.

From Region I to Region IV (including CAR), the politicians got it right. But in Visayas, it's messed up.

They need to consider that Visayas is mainly composed of various islands, and redraw the Visayas regions with that in mind.

Or, another option is allowing sub-regional offices; sub-regional funds; sub-regional this and that. This way, what's happening in Negros wouldn't happen in other islands.

Or, we can overhaul the entire government division. Maybe by doing so, we can also minimise the potential corruption in the process. There are various existing ones we can review, maybe we can adapt them and mix.

While at it, we can also clear (or clean-up) the confusion between independent cities, independent component cities, component cities, etc. (It's confusing!)

Example, “Angeles City” is actually no longer part of the Province of Pampanga. It is independent. They don't receive funds from the Provincial government of Pampanga. The taxes from Angeles doesn't go to Pampanga. During elections, Angeles don't vote the Provincial level.

We're too stuck with the old ways and systems, we can improve so many and make things clearer and efficient.

More and more Filipinos I personally know are earthquake ready. Today, even more are + war ready too.

Q1: Are you ready?
Q2: Are you ready?

Have you prepared these?

  1. Flashlights. (Ones with batteries, not USB.)
  2. Batteries. (Include rechargables.)
  3. Instant food (especially those with very long expiry dates; yes, not healthy, but…)
  4. Drinking water.
  5. Traditional radios. (Preferably ones that can be recharged so you can reserve your batteries for other purposes.)
  6. Two-way radios (a.k.a. walkie-talkie).
  7. Backpacks, belt bags.
  8. Maps and compass. Do you also know how to read maps and use a compass?
  9. Escape routes.
  10. Do you know which places were marked for emergencies?

Some of the people I know also have generators, gas, and bunkers already. Yes, bunkers in the Philippines (oh, and guns, really).

Don't rely on electronic gadgets. The first things to go fast are electricity supply and communication network.

Remember there are 3 major fault lines in Luzon.

  1. East Valley Fault System
  2. West Valley Fault System (100+ km long; from Angat Dam to Luzon-Batangas boundary)
  3. Manila Trench. On the West Philippine Sea, running from Northern Luzon to near Mindoro Island.

We haven't even considered the 1,200-km Philippine Fault System (which itself is major too, but we rarely hear about it). It runs from Northern Luzon to Southern Mindanao.

Then the currently unstable and volatile China issue, which, as I've talked about previously, can easily turn into a major regional or world war.

Are you ready, or, “bahala na si Bathala” again?

See in the attached map in the post above? That's where we live, and work.

According to the FaultFinder app, we are only 5.2 km away (straight line) from the nearest West Valley Fault System.

I can easily run 5 km between 50 and 60 min (in 2020, I can do 5 for 35 to 40 min)). That's how close we are. (And it is my major reason why I avoid working in Taguig and Pasig, again.)

Not to mention, the type of soil underneath our cities, and liquefaction, also matter big time. (It affects the “intensity” of an earthquake, which is different from “magnitude”.)

We can't just leave. Where else should we go? Forget about the other natural disasters, earthquakes have recently occurred in places initially thought of should not have any; or at least have no recorded earthquake or oral history. It can happen anywhere.

Our best move is to be prepared.

Yep. It's actually old, even before they adjusted the 9-dash line. Originally, it was the KMT who disputed it (and when they fled to Taiwan, Taiwan later continued the dispute, usually when the KMT was in power).

I think the last time I heard about it was in the early 90s, in school.

In any case, PRC-CCP reviving this dispute was strategic. And the Philippines really need to be very careful to avoid any mistakes.

This year is very dangerous for the region.

@youronlyone@c.im avatar

One way to promote the #Fediverse is by making the different fediverse software support custom profile skins and themes. This can potentially create an ecosystem of skin and theme creators, which in turn will make more people talk about it.

I differentiate between a skin and a theme because:

  • A “skin” is like changing the CSS of the default layout. Adding an image here and there, new icons, and colours and gradients.
  • While a “theme” can change the layout itself. The widgets available, or shuffle them around. Possible even a way to add custom ones (careful with this though).

Remember the original #CMS in late 90s to 2010? #PHPnuke #PostNuke #Xaraya etc.?

You can add, remove, and move widgets around. Use custom ones easily. Change colours easily. Change the widths, the columns, and so on. That is a “theme”. There were even third-party frontend packages a developer can use so they don't have to worry much about it.

Skinning is the simplest method; and this was what made #Plurk popular when it launched in May 2008 (yes, Plurk is as old as the Fediverse network). There was a Plurk skin ecosystem, which in turn increased the number of people talking about Plurk.

Apply the theming feature from the early CMS brands with Plurk's user-level skinning feature, and we create a playground for the users.

#Misskey and forks already had a good start with their user-level skinning feature (and user-level plugins at that). We just need to see it in the other popular fediverse software.

Make it easier to understand. Write guidelines in layman's terms, not dev terms, and maybe, just maybe, we can spark the interest of new users. Who doesn't want a customisable user profile?

A popular multiservice scrobbler for Android, “Pano Scrobbler”, added scrobble support for #Pleroma and forks.

I haven't seen how it looks, and unfortunately I can't test it myself. It's hard to find a good Pleroma instance with an open registration, and my original Pleroma instance closed and I only found out a few days ago.

(I did found a good instance, but I haven't received the verification email yet, for a few days now. Unless there's an issue, or I typed my email wrong? Hahaha.)

Anyway, anyone tried it? Not Pano directly, but scrobbling to a Pleroma instance. How does it look? Is it posting one message per scrobble? Or, it shows on your profile only? Or, does it add a scrobble footer automatically when you create a new post?

From 2010 to 2017, there was a thing called that we Aseans started as a grassroots movement. We were all bloggers from across, well, or South-East Asia.

Some of us joined together to produce one of the best multi-authored regional blogs. We talked about our cultures, write about what makes the region awesome. As well as, try to address the oftentimes silly and sometimes heated debates.

It's all gone now. Forgotten. The blogs dead or offline. We all grew up, got busy with our personal lives, and moved on separately. And the important reason? We lost interest in it as we started to see ASEAN was, is, and will never be for the grassroots.

That was the end of what was once a vibrant grassroot ASEAN Citizens effort. We did it all voluntarily. Without a single recognition from the top-down organisation that is ASEAN.

I had friends from , , , , , , , , and yes, even from (). (I'm from the .) It was fun. It was not tiring at all. It was because we saw a bright future for ASEAN, and we believed in it completely.

But today? ASEAN is still a top-down organisation. They kept trying to get the grassroots involved, but they are always failing. Why? Because it is a top-down organisation, as simple as that. They will never understand until they shift their mindset and approach to bottom-up.

Who is ASEAN really for?

(P.S I want to restart this grassroots movement, but I just no longer have the spark. Give me a very good reason why I should give it another chance. Or, at least, guide the new generation.)

@ubi Haha, true! It is 99% impossible to get ASEANs to use the fediverse. We can forget the fediverse, just Threads itself is being ignored even though Instagram is very popular in the region.

It's only Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Plurk, in that particular order. ^_^

The reasons for this are (at least based from experience and observation):

  1. Family connections.
  2. Fandoms + official accounts of their idols
  3. Government accounts.

I am hoping that Threads can make fandoms and those official accounts to create Threads with Fediverse. Theoretically, it can be helpful in getting a huge chunk to move to the Fediverse

(Unfortunately, there is an anti-fandom vocal minority in the Fediverse, who's trying to gatekeep the network. /facepalm)

Another one that's good are government accounts with fediverse enabled.

But, until those happen, those 5 SNS platforms will remain.

As for language, except for the #Philippines and #Singapore, English is not an official language in the 8 member Nations (even though English is the official language of the organisation itself). Many can speak English, but it's more natural for them to speak in their local languages.

There are ASEANs in the fediverse network, but in the grand scheme of things… we're still few and a minority.

But, yeah, still alive and kicking. And no one cares about the plurk score anymore, those still active just plurk casually. It has turned into a more “private” place.

Although some of us still cross-post, and usually get different results per platform (which is interesting).

youronlyone,
@youronlyone@c.im avatar

@weirdwriter Exactly.

I'm one of those bloggers. In the early days of blogging (2000-2007), we only cared about content and making connections with like-minded individuals and readers. After that, many of us (almost all, I guess) switched to how much we're earning.

I built my own websites and blogs, and the way I built them also shifted around maximising my earnings. I wrote content because I knew it's going to be either viral, or have a long tail marketing effect.

Around 2017/2018, I started to question myself, but didn't really act on it. It was only in late 2020 that I actually stopped. I'm back to my roots. I blog because I want to, not because I want to earn. Also, based on my interests and no longer because I knew it's going to be viral or have a long tail effect.

In my circle, and a few others I know, (and even at work actually) we started to differentiate between these two types of people: “influencers” and “content creators”.

In some of the companies I worked for, they even have two separate lists. Basically:

  • “Influencers” are those with large followings and will do anything to make more money.

They are basically treated as buying an ad spot, but with a clear recommendation from the “influencer” instead of traditional ads.

Also, they promised that they'll generate in-bound links or sign-ups between 4 and 5 digits. That's what they are getting paid for.

  • “Content creators” on the other hand are those who may, or may not, have a large following, but they have a loyal base and their word truly are “influential”.

They don't promise anything, like potential in-bound links or sign-ups. Their word is simply trusted. People know that they give an honest review, not because they got paid or received some free item.

It's amazing to see those lists because even though they are different companies, they ended up with practically similar lists. And “influencers” are longer than “content creators”.

Visiting the #Philippines or already here? Here's yet another set of tips from #YourOnlyOne #ConfidentTraveler!

Topic: Fruits!

Never leave the Philippines without eating these fruits, and taking a bunch with you when you fly home.

Mangosteen

While popular in Southeast Asia, the Mangosteen in the Philippines is the best variant in the world. Mangosteen is plenty and cheap in the country. You can find it anywhere, from wet markets to supermarkets to street stalls.

There are also many other products made from Mangosteen, from coffee to juice to daily supplements, even a candy and cookies!

Banana (local: saging)

Like Mangosteen, Philippine bananas are the best in the world. There was even a joke how a Philippine banana was exported in the West, and a local restaurant bought banana supplies from those countries and used it, hence, their very simple banana dish (that is ₱20 elsewhere) is worth a Big Mac (₱200). Without them realising the banana they imported originated from their neighbour.

Of course it's a joke. Or maybe not. (We did have an incident like this decades ago, for shoes. Marikina-made shoes were exported. Branded. And then that brand sold it here. 🤣)

Trivia: An endemic banana, "abaca", is also used to produce "Manila Hemp", which is expensive.

Mangoes (local: mangga)

Yes, the best in the world too! Some of our Asian neighbours visit the Philippines just to eat Philippine mangoes, because it's very expensive in their country.

Pineapple (local: pinya)

The best? Well, some of those popular foreign pineapple brands actually have farms here in the Philippines because they found that Philippine-produced pineapples are better.

Trivia: Pineapple was brought here during the colonial era. It's not endemic.

Trivia: Pineapple fibres are used to make clothes, and are usually expensive. It's the most common Philippine linen. Filipinos were the first to create clothes from Pineapple fibres. In fact, like the Coconut, Filipinos found use to everything Pineapple, generally, nothing goes to waste.

(1/2)

@pilipinas @philippines #Pilipinas #Filipino #Pinoy #Food #Fruits

youronlyone,
@youronlyone@c.im avatar

Coconut (local: buko, niyog)

Yes, you guessed it right again! The best coconut in the world. It's also exported as well. Ask a Filipino how to properly eat a coconut. Most foreigners only drink the juice. You should eat the "white" part, that's the actual coconut. Never ever throw it!

After eating, you can use the coconut case for various things. One such is what we call "bunot", it helps shine flat wooden floors after putting floor wax on it.

No part of a coconut goes to waste in the Philippines. It is also used in a lot of Filipino foods!

Durian

No comment on this one. Just look for it. 😉 It's sweet, promise.

Jackfruit (local: langka)

A must! It is also part of the famous "halo-halo" summer crushed ice drink/food. A halo-halo without langka is incomplete.

Papaya

If you haven't tried Papaya, you definitely should. Usually included in dishes to give a dish a different taste, but eating Papaya by itself is better because you'll be able to taste it fully.

Special mention: Calamansi

Usually called Philippine lemon. Calamansi is small. This is endemic as well. According to foreigners, it is better than the regular lemon.

You'll often see this in restaurants. We use this in almost every food, either as part of the ingredients, or as a condiment. For example, combine soy sauce + calamansi and you get an exotic dip for your chicken, pork, fish, and so on.

We use it for pansit (Filipino noodles) like in pancit canton and pancit palabok. Also in goto and lugaw (porridge). Once you've tasted calamansi in various ways, you'll replace your regular lemon, and other ingredients, with it.

What the hell are these people even on about?

Steam Deck has done more for Linux adoption than almost any desktop Linux effort. In fact, hands down, Linux is a better gaming platform than Mac—which makes it the best PC gaming platform after Windows.

And Linux gaming is so good, I can see it surpassing Windows quite soon.

youronlyone,

@atomicpoet Also, in certain cases, Linux WINE is also better for Windows-based games.

The games I play (or used to) were better under Linux than in Windows:

  • Guild Wars 2
  • Runes of Magic
  • Tabula Rasa (when it was still online)
  • Ragnarok Online
  • World of Warcraft
  • Uncharted Waters Online (when it was still online)

Some people I know also had the same experience for other WIndows-based games when running under Linux WINE.

Of course, it's much better for games with a native Linux client, even if compared to its native Windows client.
