What is Free Software?

“Free software” means software that respects users' freedom and community. (..) It's a matter of liberty, not price. To understand the concept, you should think of “free” as in “free speech,” not as in “free beer.” We sometimes call it “libre software,” borrowing the French/Spanish word ("libre") for “free” as in freedom, to show we don't mean the software is gratis."

This new data poisoning tool lets artists fight back against generative AI

"It lets artists add invisible changes to their art so that if it’s scraped into an AI training set, it can cause the resulting model to break in chaotic and unpredictable ways."

Meta's latest "privacy feature", which charges you for not showing ads, is the most ridiculous (yes, that's the word), theatrical and stupid "interpretation" of European law. I'm not sure if they're doing it in bad faith or if they need better lawyers.

hey heads up to everyone who uses more than one name or has strong separation of personal and professional identity:

I changed my display name in the web client for Teams to my full legal name for a call with the bank and this, to my astonishment, propagated to my local Windows install and now that name is all over it.

veroandi,
@veroandi@mastodon.social avatar

@0xabad1dea I was lucky to have a separate laptop for work. But in my old Windows personal computer I have disabled the option to connect with a Microsoft account.

veroandi,
@veroandi@mastodon.social avatar

@nemobis @noybeu I also agree that to change a business model based on ads, an alternative may be charging users. Having platforms like these costs a lot - Meta has more than 70.000 employees, so they need money from somewhere. But in that case, they should charge everyone (my view), not only those that want their fundamental rights respected. They cannot divide citizens in 2 categories. And they will charge high fees so people will never pay for it, everyone will choose ads. Nothing changes. :(

Infosec friends are unanimous: if you're using Chrome, you want to visit chrome://settings/adPrivacy and turn off Ad Topics, Site-Suggested Ads, and Ad Measurement.

IMPORTANT: you must do this for each of your Chrome profiles, since it's not a global setting.

veroandi,
@veroandi@mastodon.social avatar

@kentbrew we really have to trust Google to be sure that toggling these buttons will actually stop any kind of data being collected and shared.

And you all know that if a lot of people start doing it, they'll release an update that "accidentally" rolls it all back and users will have to configure it again, but users won't know, because we shouldn't have to monitor automatic changes to configurations we've already set.

Why We Should Stop Using JavaScript According to Douglas Crockford (Inventor of JSON)

"We're stuck with this crap and they keep piling new features on everything. The new features always create new problems, it doesn't have to be like that. We could be using clean OS, clean languages/runtimes in a much more reliable way. I've done JS for a generation. It's time for the next thing. It's not a radical point of view but a normal evolutionary view"

Some web scraping job tasks:

  • Utilise advanced techniques to bypass blocking technologies, including CAPTCHAs, IP blocking, and user agent restrictions
    &
  • Ensure compliance with applicable data privacy regulations and ethical web scraping practices

veroandi,

If they explicitly write "bypass" and "circumvent" blocking technologies in their job description, why bother asking for ethical skills from developers? They don't really want an "ethical dev", do they?😏
