Literally the first thing in this 53 year old book is Gerald Weinberg destroying AI bullshit

tony,
@tony@hoyle.me.uk avatar

@thomasfuchs 4GL, which begat things like Uniface
MFC..
VB..

All were supposed to make programming 'just clicking buttons' and all failed completely.

AI is more of the same.

tony,
@tony@hoyle.me.uk avatar

@nip @thomasfuchs That view was fairly widely held.. contemporary scifi talked of planetary computers rather than the (as yet not possible) idea of them being small enough to carry around.

Uncovering the Forgotten Female Astronomers of Yerkes Observatory
It all started with a photo of Einstein.

In the first half of the 20th century, Yerkes Observatory in Wisconsin employed more than 100 women, many who were astronomers. But their names have all been lost to time—until now. via @atlasobscura

@Leisureguy @gutenberg_org There are clients that can generate descriptions using AI.. You really have to be careful you've read the results though.

Do you have a favorite vintage computer?

@nixCraft BBC for me just because of its hackability.. I also like the amiga because of what it was for the time. The spectrum because it basically was my childhood..

I like this one as the entire description is AI generated rubbish..

In a reply today someone threw a statistic at me. My first thought was "that can't be right at all". In the modern world we get a lot of stats thrown at us, and it's a really useful skill to be able to look at a stat, and without much effort work out if it is plausible.

I'm not talking about checking it's accurate. Just plausible. Could it be true? Or is it out by several orders of magnitude?

Let's look at the stat from today and work out if it's at all plausible. 1/n

@quixoticgeek I present the following.. I suspect your figures will come to a similar conclusion:

For everyone in the EU currently being spammed with black friday sales:
Check if they hiked the price to fake the sale

If they did, they're violating an EU mandate that started this year, that the "before price" HAS to be the lowest of the last 30 days. Fines can go up into the millions, so you really don't want to mess this up :>

Feel free to send them a gentle reminder if they do. I have zero sympathy for the practice or the companies doing it. Stop leaning on psychological warfare for sales

I've been spammed by black Friday sales for a month.. Not seen a single genuine good deal yet

If Braverman keeps dominating the headlines, Sunak is going to have to appoint another former Prime Minister to the cabinet.

And so on, until there are none left.

It would be extremely helpful if some people could get over the idea that the state and government of Israel represents all Jewish people everywhere, something Jewish people even in Israel keep telling us is not true.

tony,
@tony@hoyle.me.uk avatar

@gwynnion
Doesn't help that the press routinely say 'Israel vs Hamas'.. one is a country, the other is a political/military group within a country. It somehow manages to both imply that every citizen of Israel is OK with what is going on whilst implying that every citizen of Palestine is somehow a legitimate target.

ProjectFearlessness, to random

After invading Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza, the Israeli army found no Hamas fighters, no Hamas central command, no tunnels, and no hostages.

They did find a few rusty AK-47s, a laptop and some CDs.

They would have found lots of dead bodies as a result of their siege of the hospital, but they didn't see them.

They would also have found they committed a war crime, but they didn't see that either.

tony,
@tony@hoyle.me.uk avatar

@ProjectFearlessness Hospitals will treat anyone whether they walk in carrying an AK47 or not, so acting like finding weapons in a hospital in the middle of a warzone is proof of anything is completely silly. I'm actually surprised they didn't find more.

Hello Mastodon, anyone has any recommendations for an Android tablet that:

  • weighs less than 500g, or ideally less than 450g
  • has a 10.5'' screen (or larger)
  • has guaranteed security updates for a reasonably long time
tony,
@tony@hoyle.me.uk avatar

@tedted I presume the US store price is not including tax, as they're wierd over there and never quote real prices.

That difference though is quite large even with that taken into account.

Webcams being described as being "mirrorless" is a delighftul level of tech marketing bollocks.

Like, imagine the opposite. A webcam with the mirror from an old Nikon F2 or whatever bouncing up and down 30 times a second while you discuss sprint goals and KPIs.

At least nobody would complain about mechanical keyboard clickiness on calls after that experience.
