I decided to try out FreeBSD and it won't grab an IP from my network. It absolutely refuses to be assigned, and so welp, idk what else to say other than that experiment died quick

@Adorable_Sergal That's uh... very strange. Perhaps you can ask about it on one of their many community outlets? (e.g. traditional stuff like mailing lists, forums, IRC, to modernish stuff like reddit and discord)

Okay, I hate Windows 11.

How bad of an idea is it to downgrade to Windows 8.1?

#Microsoft #windows11

techokami,
@techokami@woof.tech avatar

@Adorable_Sergal quite bad because Win8.1 is no longer supported, and it's Windows 8

Here's an index to nearly all main software out there, neatly organized by Marcus Schommer in a single place:

@TheByteAttic I am deeply interested in the Agon Light, but it seems weird that there isn't an open hardware PS/2 keyboard to go along with it. When I think of oldskool microcomputers I always imagine the ol' WEDGE form factor, and it's sad that there doesn't seem to be an option to make an Agon Light like that. Though I do have a case-less PS/2 keyboard lying around somewhere that I'd just need to figure the pinouts to for making a cable that goes directly to the Agon Light, then make a case without owning one of them newfangled 3D printer doohickeys... that'd make for a nice one-off but I'd rather see a solution that was more accessible to anyone that wanted something similar.

techokami,
@techokami@woof.tech avatar

@TheByteAttic please no facebook, I tried to look through it but it felt slimy and broken (especially someone's post with such a build; I was interested in it but all I got was errors!)
Also you did miss the part where I said that I don't have a 3D printer... I have no real space for one and the only person near me that has one is... [notices you're European] ...the equivalent of a few countries away

Someone on Discord said I have a "retro furry vibe" for my art style and I dunno how to feel about that.

@Adorable_Sergal pride, perhaps? If you're nailing the style of The Classics then that should be something good

@fedora Oh wow, 20 years! I remember installing the original Fedora Core via a DVD inside a copy of Fedora Core For Dummies that I bought at Barnes & Nobles. Since my internets were total garbage back then, I bought newer copies of the For Dummies book mainly for the DVD to upgrade with. It replaced the boxed copy of Red Hat Linux I got at Staples! Things on Linux have greatly improved since then, and a lot of the pain points I had back in the day are extinct! Here's to another 20 years!

There's a special hell for sites which have password requirements that are like 16 letters, one or more numbers, upper case and lowercase, at least one special character, and we disabled pasting/password managers

The cardinal sin, the one that'll make preservationists scream:

"We tested the {tape/disc} in a machine so we didn't waste time making an image if it was bad. After playing the game for a few hours we found we couldn't load the tape again."

Lesson here is, take the image first, you can always write it back to a new tape, but that one read may be your only chance...

(the above sin was committed by a museum ... sigh)

Something just occurred to me

  • "GNU Imp" is a terrible program
  • Also people are angry about the name
  • By comparison Blender is actually kind of good now
  • Also Blender has a cross platform GUI toolkit good enough it is now used by other applications (eg VCV Rack

Solve two problems at once: Build a 2D paint program on top of Blender's core libraries; name it Blimp

@mcc If you need a simpler editor, KDE's KolourPaint is my go-to tool. It's basically WinXP Paint but with lots of improvements

Intel 14th Gen, basically the same CPU with minor to little performance improvement over 13th gen and probably a waste of sand. Intel is getting desperate as AMD Ryzen still eating their cake.

That power usage, though… :oof:

@chikorita157 When I was building my new computer recently, I was debating if I should wait for the 14th gen CPUs or not wait and get a 13th gen. Looks like I made a good choice to not wait!

I'm so happy Unity decided to self-destruct! I mean, sorry for your losses and all, but... Not only is #Godot getting so much great attention, but I swear it's also driven more devs to Mastodon seeking out experienced #GodotEngine devs to chat with, collab, follow, and learn from! The #gamedev community has felt really lively lately!

If you're a gamedev using godot, please say hello in the replies and maybe more folks can find each other to follow!
