I happened to be at Crystal Cove State Park last week and saw these Velella Velella By-the-wind Sailors.

Photos next post...

“A jellyfish relative that spends the vast majority of its life on the surface of the open sea, velella move at the mercy of the wind, drifting over the ocean with no means of locomotion other than the sails atop their bodies. They tend to wash up on the U.S. West Coast in the spring, when wind conditions beach them onshore.”

susankitchens,

Wind sailors at Crystal Cove State park

I walked in the waves along the beach and they were washing ashore with the rising tide.

“Velella that end their lives on California beaches typically have sails that run diagonally from left to right along the length of their bodies, an orientation that catches the onshore winds heading in this direction. As the organism’s carcass dries in the sun and the soft tissues decay, the blue color disappears, leaving the transparent chitinous float behind.”

Blue Velella on wet beach in front of a tuft of eel grass.
Velella without the chitinous sail (or maybe it landed upside down on the sand), an ovalish ring of deep blue color with tiny strands emanating from the organism.
Another view of a Valella with pale blue sail standing up from body of dark blue flattish oval creature on wet beach sand, in front of strands of eelgrass.

susankitchens,

Here are a couple photos showing the remaining sails

My #CaliforniaWildflower garden bed.
Sown last mid-November. Some of the clarkia is tall! (tallest: chest height, wow)

The tiny Gilia tricolor are delicate and impressive. I passed a garden on a walk where someone has just those and poppies.

Am now wondering how to collect the seeds from each of these flowers. Poppies I understand, the rest I hope to learn. #gardening

The mix: https://www.calflora.org/app/ipl?list_id=px1910
Names:
Collinsia heterophylla: Purple Chinese houses
Clarkia unguiculata: Elegant clarkia

In foreground pink clarkia ungulata and a poppy in the distance as well as purple Chinese houses.

susankitchens,

I said I was on the lookout for how to save the seeds from my wildflowers, and I have a resource. The Everwilde site (they sell seeds) has a discussion section for how to save seeds in their ‘How to Grow” section of the site. Helpful Here's the link to their page on #GiliaTricolor

How likely do you think it will be that ill be able to a) drive across LA to LAX and then b) fly to SFO tomorrow morning... I have no idea how to estimate the navigability of coastal California during this storm #CaWx

susankitchens,

@jonny tons of power outages in NorCal due to high winds there.
More rain (much more!) is gonna fall tonight over LA/SoCal.

Image is about power outages. More and worse outages since this was posted

Not a fan of George Conway, but credit where it's due — this opening ¶ of this essay is beautifully scathing!

Essay is about the hearing whether to grant Trump total immunity (and how Trump team lost the hearing)

“The good news is that a recent study from Dr. David Ho’s lab at Columbia University found that the current -19 , which was designed to boost the body’s ability to fight of the XBB family of variants, also offers good protection against BA.2.86 and its offshoots, including JN.1.”

#DailyPictureTheme #Wait
Sowing lettuce, spinach, and kale seeds (+more) for my winter/early spring garden is when the #wait begins for home-grown winter salads.

Sowed a bunch of lettuce and greens on Friday (15 Dec) and today (18 Dec) I spy a few emerging sprouts.

This is Mesclun mix. It took 3 days to begin to appear—not bad for seeds labeled “5-14 days to appear”

My job: provide optimal conditions, #wait. It’s a marvel how these tiny things become nourishing plants. #gardening #Zone10b

susankitchens,

All kinda little sprouts appearing.
Take a peek, on the windowsill from the end of the tray—new alyssum sprouts, seen from wide view, teeny tiny arugula sprouts.

Loving how these humidity dome thingies with a catch basin below, make it easy to put seed sprouts in the windowsill.

#gardening #SeedSowing

A 6-cell seed tray with humidity tome opened to see the sprouts within. The tray is in front of a window that has vague green plant color outside. Sprouts have tiny stem and two little open leaves at top. They are about 1/4 inch high, and one sprout looks like a 3-leaf clover but that’s just because of the camera angle looking at the two sprout leaves.

Dear #Mastodon experts, if one were to build a tool that would allow a user from another social media site to cross-post to the user’s choice of any federated Mastodon instance, are there preferred tools or protocols to use?

I’m not a software developer, just a user of another social media site who wants to recommend the best tools to the other site’s dev team, but I don’t even know what to search for.

susankitchens,

@ai6yr "older white man" "who may have a connection to a person who works on campus"

<speculation> prediction: it's a domestic dispute of some sort. The person who works on campus is a relation, a domestic partner, and she has been trying to leave him or just left him or something like that.

this is all speculation, but call it informed speculation.
</speculation>

susankitchens,

@ai6yr Was reading a post on topic of socialization of young boys, written by someone who paints children's faces. A boy requested a butterfly, but his mother objected bc apparently a pretty natural insect is inappropriate for a boy. Squelch all those emotions early. Adventure, Ambition and Anger are only good outlets, nothing else. Then add life experience, disappointment and rejection, firearms, and a college campus…

I would so dearly love to witness a cultural change…

🥳Democrat Daniel McCaffery wins #Pennsylvania Supreme Court race

susankitchens,

@GottaLaff Just saw Indivisible central giving credit to Indivisible PA for working to get Daniel McCaffery elected.

Had seen @taniel's tweets about the PA state supreme court (and what's at stake), welcomed the splendid results, but wasn't aware of voter mobilization activities until today, when I saw @indivisibleteam give a shout out to Indivisible groups in PA who put in the work.

the funniest thing about Apple is the last version of MacOS features "video reactions" where if your camera sees you do a thumbs up or heart symbol with your hands, stuff happens behind you like fireworks in ANY video app you are using BY DEFAULT.

A friend was in an online therapy session, describing his trauma so the therapist asked if he was alright and he did a thumbs up and then HUGE FIREWORKS BEHIND HIS HEAD.

It's so bad that online therapy sessions now start with a warning dialog!

susankitchens,

@mathowie two cheers for "'first do no harm' design" principle
