Thinking about cruelty. We associate and see cruelty most with immediate, person on person or animal cruelty. Remoteness doesn’t reduce the cruelty of impact, or intent, but it makes it harder to feel and judge.

This really works in favour of those in power, who can use drones, or policy, to kill and injure others, rather than, say, a knife. And it often makes us all - unwitting, uncaring - participants.

In the most glorious "fuck you" I have seen in a while, you know the book that Cumberland City Council banned because they're homophobic bigots - Holly Duhig's "A focus on Same Sex Parents"? Well, the publisher, BookLife Publishing, have made a PDF version of the book available for free.

Sure be a shame if it was shared far and wide now, wouldn't it?

I watched a documentary about elephant seals the other day and the narrator said the dominant male protects his harem of females from other males. And I’m like, protect them from what? What’s the new guy gonna do that the old guy isn’t doing? Then he ran over a baby to mate. 🤷‍♀️

Der -Politiker sagte, es gebe bereits eine angemessene Besteuerung von Einkommen.

Brasilien will seine Pläne für eine Mindestbesteuerung von Milliardären bis Juli konkretisieren. Der und Frankreich sehen die Idee positiv. Eine solche könnte jährlich 250 Milliarden Dollar einbringen.

Derzeit gibt es weltweit rund 2.700 mit einem Gesamtvermögen von fast 13 Billionen Dollar.

Der Papst hätte Putin raten können, sich seinen Krieg in den Allerwertesten zu schieben und sich zurückzuziehen. Franziskus hielt es indes für richtiger den Überfallenen zu raten sich endlich zu ergeben. Die Opfer zum Problem zu erklären ist auch so eine Konstante im Ukrainekrieg

Er sagte: "Verhandeln ist niemals ein Sich-Ergeben. Es ist der Mut, das Land nicht in den Selbstmord zu führen".
Traurig aber wahr in Anbetracht der schwächelnden Unterstützung des Westens.
"Wenn du deine Niederlage siehst, wenn du siehst, dass es nicht weitergeht, muss man den Mut haben, zu verhandeln."
Die Ukraine könnte gezwungen sein, unter schlechten Vorzeichen Verhandlungen anzustreben.
Wenn man das nicht will, muß man die stärker unterstützen!

=630kg CO₂ emissions for a clock

¹ assuming energy consumption of 3wh per response (www.scinexx.de/news/technik/wie-viel-strom-braucht-der-ki-boom/ = 3 - 9wh, but I've seen estimates from <1 to 30wh, it's a huge insecurity)

    Gerade mit Bezug auf "Es wird immer schlimmer", wäre anonyme/destruktive Anrufe wegzublocken - machen wir in Social Media ja auch regelmäßig - ggf. eine Option?
    Diese Belästigungen beeinträchtigen deine wichtige Arbeit und erzielen damit schon ihren Zweck.

    An den vier Warnsignalen für autoritäre Politik aus "Wie Demokratien sterben" orientiere ich mich:

    1️⃣ Ablehnung demokrat. Spielregeln

    2️⃣ Delegitimierung politischer Gegner

    3️⃣ Gewalt tolerieren/ermutigen

    4️⃣ Bereitschaft, bürgerl. Freiheiten von Gegnern u. Medien zu beschneiden

    "Ein Politiker, der auch nur eines dieser Kriterien erfüllt, gibt Anlass zur Sorge."

    Das Buch kann man im Handel oder immer wieder mal bei einzelnen Landeszentralen f. politische Bildung günstiger bekommen.

    Bin mit von Clifford D. Simak durch, war wieder ein sehr schönes Leseerlebnis von 1963.

    Jetzt folgt ein weiterer Klassiker (für mich): von Kim Stanley Robinson. Auf dem Pluto entdecken Astronauten ein gigantisches Monument, das die gesamte Überlieferung der Menschen in Frage stellt. Denn die Säulen des Pluto wurden irgendwann in der Frühzeit von Menschenhand erbaut.

    Wie hat dir gefallen?
    Ich hab es gerade durch und mir hat's gefallen. Also, die Handlung an sich, das Setting mit sehr langlebigen Menschen und die Folgen und natürlich das Geheimnis um die Säulen. Erschreckend der gesellschaftliche Zustand der Menschheit 🫣
    Ist tatsächlich mein ersten Buch von - macht Appetit auf mehr :)

    Danke für den Hinweis auf Simak, klingt auch interessant.
