@blake More so than Mastodon's client APIs, this is one feature I'd love for other fediverse networks to copy.

I know many of them do have some RSS feeds, but Mastodon goes a lot further.

Same for dismissing having to pick an instance as a serious hurdle to many casual internet users.

If people say this is what stops them, then we should believe them and make this step easier.

I actually like that the official Mastodon app defaults to their main instance, but makes it super easy to pick your own.

This is how Bluesky does it (arguably there is only one node, but the home screen looks the same on both apps), and they seem to be doing pretty well.

I do wish the community has been more open to this before Bluesky started gaining momentum though.

@SharonGibson3 @BlackAzizAnansi Yes, I made https://jointhefediverse.net for folks to share with their friends to better explain this aspect of how the fediverse works.

And I think Mastodon received a bit too much attention.

There are alternatives that have a lot of the features people have been missing.

Plus, considering that Instagram and TikTok are more popular than Twitter in terms of number of users, I'd like to see the likes of Pixelfed and Peertube to get more attention in the media.

@anubis2814 @atomicpoet Yes, this is still a hurdle for many casual internet users.

I am not sure this is something I know how, or even want to solve myself though.

I know Mastodon is making the sign up process easier by suggesting their main instance as the default one in their official app, but making it easy to pick something else.

For now I'd like to keep this site really simple and let each network work this out on their own.

Like you said, I just wanted to make a very basic intro that connects more in-depth sites and discovery tools.

@tiagorangel One or two of my posts "made the rounds" and attracted some weirdos spewing the n-word, completely unrelated to the posts. And there was a wave of spam accounts that started to mass-follow people. In both instances I just blocked the offenders, but I'd like to get into the habit of also reporting this, unless the whole instance is problematic.

@tiagorangel Yes, true, there definitely are tools for this. But this particular spammer was tricky, because they registered accounts across a ton of legitimate instances, and while they used the same username, there's no way to block by that.

@aka_quant_noir Yes, same happened to me. It's a real pain, I hope a future update to Mastodon will make it easier to deal with this kind of spam.
