Obsessed with search engines, databases, and online information collections forever. Writing books & such since 1996, ResearchBuzz since 1998. Autistic and too tired to hide it. Pronouns: she/they/hey you.

We could be doing a lot more with authoritative structures (and without AI) to make good Web search.

Snarks (as opposed to jokes), doom, and reply guys are blocked without warning.

If y'all are trying to follow #HurricaneHilary in #California and you want to focus on local news, may I suggest Marion's Monocle?

Marion's Monocle uses the FCC license database to find local news sources by state. It then bundles them into Web or news searches for you to explore further.

Free, no ads, works on your phone.

If you try it and you like it, please consider a boost? Thank you.

I also started ResearchBuzz on April 20, 1998 as near as I can tell, and I will swear on the religious book of your choice that I did not know what it meant at the time.

It's only in the last 5 or so years that I have taken up the herb. And as Mr. Tosh said, legalize it and I will advertise it. (Meanwhile I confine myself to what's legal in NC)

In nicer news, Granny's care center's partial covid restrictions will be lifted on August 25, the day before Granny's 100th birthday.

Operation "Bring a dog to visit Granny" can continue...

@researchbuzz depends on the type of interview I suppose, but no, generally I expect only very light editing. Combining sentences, editing for clarity, that kinda stuff. At the end of the day, it’s your name attached so it’s reasonable to expect them to be your actual words too

Also I think it’s totally fair (and needed) to reach out to the interviewer & editor to say you were surprised by how much was edited and can they offer any insight into why/how that happened

researchbuzz,
@researchbuzz@researchbuzz.masto.host avatar

@lauraehall To be clear they have not published it yet. I have responded that I am very uncomfortable with the extent to which I have been edited.

The interview is rather personal and I find myself upset that my words were deemed insufficient to describe my experience.

    I'm working on a #Mastodon tool today that will search for a hashtag across multiple instances and return a list of related hashtags (hashtags returned in the same search, sorted by rated of occurrence.) That should help y'all who are looking for more discovery methods.

    While I'm putting that together, check out MastoGizmos: https://mastogizmos.com/ . It's a collection of a dozen one-page, JavaScript-driven tools for exploring Mastodon and Mastoverse. Free, ad-free, works on your phone.

    Testing the hashtag aggregator. Oh dear.

    researchbuzz,
    @researchbuzz@researchbuzz.masto.host avatar

    Okay, I got all the code working, now I just have to CSS it and put it up. I'll do that after lunch.

    In addition to aggregating a list of hashtags by mention, and linking to searches for those hashtags over four instances, I'm also listing accounts that appear frequently as well.

    "Beginning in the 1890s, newspapers... tried to appeal to a broader audience by publishing popular fiction derisively called 'shund' or 'trash.' Yiddish authors like Sholem Aleichem and Y.L. Peretz strove to create a national literature. Shund stories, on the other hand, were written to make a profit, veering into the sensational and melodramatic — tales of romance, adventure, anything that would sell."

    I'm going to demystify Black hair for those who don't understand. Hair is hair. The amount of curl is the only difference. Straight hair is oily because natural scalp oil can slide down it. Curly hair is dry because the scalp oil gets trapped in the curl.

    researchbuzz,
    @researchbuzz@researchbuzz.masto.host avatar

    @StillIRise1963 excellent evolutionary move to help keep the head cool:

    'The researchers found that all hair reduced solar radiation to the scalp, but tightly curled hair provided the best protection from the sun’s radiative heat while minimizing the need to sweat to stay cool. '

    I'm autistic and I can't stand any of that beauty stuff. No telling how much work I didn't/don't get because I can't stand putting smelly grease on my face. Apparently my contributions are impossible unless I put smelly grease on my face, because I am not "professional" otherwise.

    I have great sympathy for anybody subjected to the same bullshit, and it's worse for Black women because their bullshit is carcinogenic and I'm just weird.

    Cleaning up the office and I accidentally made a cat fort out of a few empty boxes I stacked to the side. Bojangles is creeping in there.

    Periodically I have to go scratch on top of one of the boxes with a plastic fork so she has an excuse to bust through them like a calico Kool-Aid man. She wanders off like she doesn't care while I reassemble the fort, then sneaks back in when I return to work. #Caturday

    'California has a new gray wolf pack in Tulare County... it is at least 200 air miles from the nearest known pack in northeastern California.... Gray wolves are native to California but were extirpated in the state by the 1920s. In late 2011, OR7 crossed the state line to become the first wolf in nearly a century to make California part of his range before returning to Oregon to form the Rogue Pack."
