Spent 2 days mindlessly adjusting the wire on my mouse because I thought being tangled up somewhere was the reason it was being weird and jumpy, because that usually helps.

It finally dawned on me that it might just be dying.

Another mouse works fine.

But I liked my old mouse, it was just a basic Microsoft X802382 but it was perfect, I don't want to go mouse shopping 😭 🖱️

eBay 🤔

I love libraries.

But I also love hoarding books that are mine, precious.

And I have the disposable income that I want to funnel towards supporting human authors.

So sometimes I test drive books at the library by checking them out, and then buy them from my local bookshop halfway through.

One of my favorite things about working in the #mainframe community is the wealth of experience and different perspectives to things that us Linux distributed folks have taken for granted for...ever.

Want using man pages to be made easier? Lionel Dyck used Charm's gum tooling to do just that. Behold, Mantastic! ✨📚

His examples are on a shell on z/OS, but I played with it on Debian too.

A colleague from another company said something really kind to me yesterday on a recorded, public meeting. It made my week and I don't even think he realized it.

Everyone, do this more.

I read in a parenting book that when your little kid is being particularly moody, you should check if they are:

  1. Hungry
  2. Tired

Turns out, this is a good strategy for all humans 😅

PSA: Headaches and migraines aren't the same thing. No, not even if they're bad headaches.

And since I sometimes get migraine auras, oftentimes the head pain isn't even the first sign of a migraine for me! The visual disturbance (they manifest as blind spots for me), losing simple words, and nausea usually are.

I'm grateful to people who try to help by sharing their headache solutions, because I know their heart is in the right place, but I'm battling a whole different dragon over here 😕

@foo I've had migraines forever, but aura developed when I was almost 30. The first time was a terrifying experience, but thankfully I was home. I later learned my father had them too.

Still, it's always quite alarming because I forget what it's like. I'll just be sitting there and chunks of vision start disappearing, and so I blink or stand up or look at something else, as I have minor panic before I realize, and run to take my migraine medicine so I have a chance of putting a stop to it 😱

While the boys were having dinner, I brought my Oliver 9 #typewriter to the table to see if I could make progress on the alignment issue (cutting off the bottoms of letters) and discovered several more issues with the ability for it to advance properly and the effort it takes to switch to symbol mode and have alignment right. I seem to have a little way to go.

Not sure I'm setting a good example by bringing my latest tinkering project to the table while they are eating 😅 ...or maybe I am? 🤔

A pre-configured, rack mount, IBM #LinuxONE 4 Express?

It has arrived! 🥳🐧

The LinuxONE comparison chart helps see where this lands in the family specs-wise: https://www.ibm.com/products/linuxone-4#Product+comparison

And we've shared more about this launch at: https://ibm.biz/linuxone4-express 🎉

I ordered a VisionFive 2 RISC-V SBC on a whim, with my excuse being an upcoming talk I'm giving about non-x86 architectures at the @socallinuxexpo next month. It'll be added to my little collection that includes a few Raspberry Pi models (arm) and an old Sun Ultra 10 (sparc64).

Shout out to my #RISCV family! Am I about to have some fun, or did I make a silly mistake?

@daridrea I'm learning the bumpy way why it's not a crown-snatcher yet. Installation even of Ubuntu is quite involved, and the limitations are quite... limiting. This is fun, but not the dead simple install rpi users are used to.

I bought my Oliver 9 #typewriter via Facebook Marketplace and now it shows me TONS of typewriters for sale and it's so bad 😅

I have 8 typewriters. I said I'd stop for real at 7. Aaahhh. The Oliver 9 really is special though, so I'm not sad about making an exception.

Is there a support group?

Welp. #typewriter

Got it for $200 as non-functional, but an hour of cleanup and extracting the crusty ribbon from the holders, and it works!

It needs a lot more work to get it in good shape, but I'm glad it seems solid.

Both being technologists, my husband and I have a complicated, encrypted, and highly disciplined approach to storing important digital documents (financial, estate planning, medical, etc).

What do normal people do?

Bonus points for tips for people whose only device is a very basic Android phone (no laptop/desktop computer).

Ooh, look what #gomplate v3.11.6 has... s390x binaries! 🥳https://github.com/hairyhenderson/gomplate/releases/tag/v3.11.6

I've been spying on them since support for the platform landed in back in September, so this is really exciting to see #IBMZ #LinuxONE

Hello, me again, catching up on @adventofcomputing episodes.

Today was one that's truly legendary, "Episode 31 - Road to Transistors: Part I" https://adventofcomputing.com/?guid=0488f6d9-a0fe-4e21-847c-c63310a218f3

It has everything! The various reasons vacuum tubes aren't suitable for computing (🔥🔥🔥), the fascinating history of the cryotron, and even some Russian spies!

Can't wait to listen to part 2.
