The s390x open source team at IBM works to get the latest versions of open source software running for #Linux on IBM #zSystems & #LinuxONE

In April 2023 currency was maintained for over two dozen projects, including: @ScyllaDB @HashiCorp's #Terraform & @apacheactivemq

@selea @jbowen We don't have a z16 there yet 😭 but it has to be on the roadmap, the Telum processor is a game-changer and people will want to get on that AI accelerator ride.

My youngest has been sleeping in my home office overnight since he was born 2.5 years ago. He's now with his brother, so I can work on stuff in the evening now 🎉

Maybe I'll finally get around to fixing the fact that only one of the 4 servers in this rack is actually in fully working order 😬 They are in varying states of decay.

@0x58 It's such a lovely machine! Both the ancient hard drive and CD-ROM died in it somewhere along the way, so I replaced the hard drive recently and am working on a network boot solution to get NetBSD installed on it (used to run Debian).

In 2019 I joined IBM and the team I was on ran our first . As a virtual event already, we had a head start on the years ahead 😆

So we've had them every year! And every year it's grown! The CFP for the 2023 edition is now open 🎙️

If you want to catch my attention, submit something about or on , since those are the proposals I'll be reviewing 📚

@selea I should actually toss the code on an instance to see if it'll build, that could be an interesting story at the very least. Maybe I will.

Beyond that (and the fact that I don't have unfettered access to something appropriate for service-level production) it may actually be a little boring 🤔 Linux is just Linux, so I can TELL people it's on s390x, but users wouldn't notice 😅

@selea There are Go 1.19 binaries for s390x, it's actually a language that has pretty great support, including being able to use the on-chip hardware acceleration for AES https://pkg.go.dev/crypto/aes 👏

I don't believe it will solve everything, of course not, but 90% of what I did as a junior sysadmin 15 years ago is now handled/solved by Ansible and containers. We're always evolving.

@brunty Xubuntu at home, RHEL at work.

I probably wouldn't have accepted the RHEL thing a decade ago, but after years of fighting with corporate VPNs because I insisted on using Linux when it wasn't supported, it's nice to just relax and have corporate IT deal with it when I have a problem. I have too much real work to do to ever want to debug an IPSec connection ever again.
