For walking. Not keen on traffic. So campaign to put people before cars. Life saved by NHS 1950, 1967 and 2006. Not waving but drowning.

“Forcing all UK supermarkets to put “not for EU” labels on meat, dairy and plant products in a move to assuage the concerns of unionists in Northern Ireland will force up prices and increase inflation, ministers have been told.” The Brexit benefits just keep rolling in. And soon one suspects the “not for EU” label will mean lower quality and lower environmental standards. #brexit

“Labour vows to cut financial ‘red tape’ and ‘unashamedly champion’ UK sector”. As the party clearly no longer supports ordinary working class people should it change its name? Perhaps ‘Banker’ or ‘The City Financier Party’ might be more appropriate. #Labour

#ClimateDiary Now this is a story that has cheered me up (not much, recently). It sounds like a really wonderful, thought-through regenerative #restoration project - tree planting done the right way.

And: it is wonderful to see the efforts of people like Guy Shrubsole, George Monbiot and Eoghan Daltun, campaigning and writing about UK and Irish #rainforests for years, bear fruit. All this work does matter. Spurs me on a bit again! #HistoricalEcology #Devon

@pvonhellermannn Tree planting is not the way to rewild. All those plastic tubes! Fence the area off from grazing animals. Leave for 50 to 100 years and bingo you have genuinely rewilded. #rewilding

pedestrians1st,
@pedestrians1st@mastodon.online avatar

@neileroberts @pvonhellermannn Don’t we need to get away from the ‘do something’ mindset that involves economic activity and resulting pollution that tree planting involves. Shouldn’t we be just letting nature take its course? I agree urgent action is required but the action needs to be do much less.

pedestrians1st,
@pedestrians1st@mastodon.online avatar

@pvonhellermannn @NatureMC @neileroberts I did read the article and working to save rare endangered species is obviously worthwhile. However I still maintain humanity needs to urgently do a lot less. For example burning and extracting fossil fuels, making plastic (even for tree planting) and manufacturing stuff we really could do without and transporting it around the world on highly polluting ships. Ending wars might also be a pretty good idea!

£8 Billion of £13.6 Billion spent on PPE was not used, was no good, and was wasted money.

Three quaters!

These figures have been revealed as the National Crime Agency investigates bribery and fraud in the awarding of PPE contracts.

HMRC haven’t charged a single company with tax avoidance despite new powers.

British Overseas Territories have failed to report firms using them as tax havens.

Two thirds of the the UK's richest earners paid less tax in 2023 than in the year before, while our hospitals and schools crumble and we bear an increasing tax burden.

It’s time for the Treasury and HMRC to get tough on the tax avoiders, so we can save our NHS and public services.

@Woodknot I very much agree with your sentiments but dislike the Taxpayers Alliance term tax burden. Taxes are not a burden they help to redistribute income and wealth and pay for our public services. They are not a burden but a benefit!

“An Israeli military spokesperson said 21 soldiers were killed in Maghazi refugee camp in central Gaza when two buildings they had mined for demolition collapsed after militants fired grenades at a nearby tank. Reports in local media said explosives set by the soldiers detonated prematurely.” Sad but as (Matthew 26, 26:52) has it "Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword." #Palestine #Israel

Alice Ferguson, of Playing Out, said: “Compared to previous generations, children’s lives have become incredibly restricted, indoors, isolated and inactive, largely due to changes in the outdoor environment. Government could reverse this trend and hugely improve children’s health and wellbeing by making streets safer and neighbourhoods more child-friendly, enabling them to get outside and play every day.” Too much traffic blights young lives not just through pollution. #traffic #children

Another sad example of a motorist getting away with it. Coroner Dr James Adeley said it was in the "interests of justice" that he named David Harwood in connection with the death of cyclist Dylan Crossey, 15. Harwood hit Dylan with his BMW while he was drunk and fiddling with his satnav. Dylan bounced over the top of his car but Harwood didn’t stop to help and Dylan died. Harwood got away with it. No doubt the police felt it was “just an accident”.

As Dan Evans argues:

That the 'progressive instincts of UK [] have not, historically, been harnessed by the Labour party says more about the Labour party than the electorate.

... we need to appreciate people’s chaotic complexity, stop assuming views are fixed and can’t be changed – & rediscover the value of empathy'.

Building a left consensus is not impossible but it does require the sort of political leadership that seems currently absent in our political class

pedestrians1st,
@pedestrians1st@mastodon.online avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 It seems that whenever the Labour Party gets a bit left wing it suffers a right wing backlash. The view being a left wing party is unelectable. It’s a good thing Clement Attlee didn’t agree but it’s sad that in the last 80 years much of his teams good work has and is being undone. #Labour

pedestrians1st,
@pedestrians1st@mastodon.online avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 @KimSJ Not sure we quite realise what we are up against. The ‘right’ have an awful lot of money. They spend it wisely by funding the right wing media, highly influential extreme right wing think tanks and distort academia by funding right wing professors (especially of economics). This adds up to a mountain of propaganda and so a distortion of public opinion and voting patterns. Not sure how without the necessary cash the left can overcome this.
