The “high speed” train Marseille - Bruxelles (that I’m taking as far as Lyon today)

Along its whole route it spends 67 minutes at stops! 🤦‍♂️

pb,
@pb@chaos.social avatar

@jon The 27 minutes in Lille are really convenient if you need to move from one end of the first train to the other end of the other one because you had to buy two separate tickets because the Carte Avantage only applies on domestic tickets. Or because there were no seats available all the way from the south to Bruxelles. Or both.

pb,
@pb@chaos.social avatar

@grlodi @jon Well no, isn’t this a flagrant violation of SNCF’s conditions of carriage? The intended solution seems to be “tant pis pour vous, prenez l’avion”.

Apple has announced some SWEEPING changes coming to the App Store in the EU with iOS 17.4:

  • Alternative app marketplaces
  • 0% commission for apps sold outside the App Store, with 0% commission on alternative payment methods (!)
  • Third-party browser engines now allowed (!!)
  • Game streaming now allowed on the App Store

We have an extensive summary of all the changes on MacStories, with more to come shortly: https://www.macstories.net/news/apple-details-how-it-plans-to-comply-with-the-eus-digital-markets-act/

pb,
@pb@chaos.social avatar

@viticci The two changes I’m not looking forward to are contactless payments and alternative browser engines. Apple Pay is so much nicer than the awful and non-interoperable apps that banks are going to come up with and the last thing Google Chrome needs is more market share.

🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

This is what happens when doesn’t work

I’m speaking 25th Oct at an EU Interreg event in Santiago de Compostela, arriving from Lisboa 🇵🇹

The evening Porto-Vigo train arrives Vigo AFTER the last Vigo-Santiago has gone

So the agency is proposing to FLY me via Madrid instead!

(I’ll stay a night in Vigo instead to avoid this, and go early 25th to Santiago)

pb,
@pb@chaos.social avatar

@jon Oh wow, turns out my mental map was completely wrong. I had Santiago somewhere in eastern Spain, but it really isn’t. Your exasperation makes so much more sense now!

So I’ve booked a non-refundable hotel room for once. It’s at short notice, so I‘m quite sure my plans won’t change. Still, I double- and triple-check the dates because I’m a Seasoned Traveller.

Guess who now has a non-refundable booking at the wrong hotel.

pb,
@pb@chaos.social avatar

In my defence, they are really confusingly named and of course I stopped reading when I saw the top one.

pb,
@pb@chaos.social avatar

@jaseg Yeah, it does feel deceptive. I’ll call them about it tomorrow. I can’t be the first to make this mistake and if they’d like me to stay again at one of their properties, they’ll rebook me.

Also as for my comments about DB resisting data sharing… what’s the only rail planner app on my phone’s home screen?

DB Navigator

Because - even to some of Germany’s neighbours - it’s actually pretty good.

Imagine DB properly internationalised it. It’d be amazing. It’d win out over Trainline or Omio because it’d be better - at least at planning routes.

But DB can’t see that opportunity.

pb,
@pb@chaos.social avatar

@jon Right? DB Navigator is what I turn to whenever I need to plan an international trip, even if it doesn’t go through Germany. If DB could not only tell me how to get from Copenhagen to Bergen but also display a convenient “Purchase Ticket” button next to the itinerary, why wouldn’t I use it?

Life's too short to argue with arrogant Danes trying to argue that border controls at the DE-DK are both legal and necessary, and that Denmark can at will decide to check whoever it likes, regardless of what the EU says

The “temporary” controls at that border are still absurd, but Denmark does have to ask the EU to keep extending the controls. Then, stupidly, the EU keeps on saying yes…

pb,
@pb@chaos.social avatar

@jon @DiegoBeghin Meanwhile I’ve flown in and out of Denmark more than I like to admit and haven’t had my documents checked a single time. Not at the border and not even a cursory glance before boarding the plane.

TGV timetables 🤬

3 hour gap with no trains in the middle of the day between Strasbourg and Paris. Damn why can France not do Takt / clock-face timetables?

This would not happen on ANY ICE LINE ANYWHERE IN GERMANY

pb,
@pb@chaos.social avatar

@partim @Alon @jon It’s also a right pain in case of a missed connection. Having to kill an hour while waiting for the next train is annoying enough. Having to kill three hours though …

I made this little viewport logger: https://viewport-logger.netlify.app/

I'd really appreciate it if you could visit it on your devices — especially small screens — because I want to use the data to illustrate just how much screen fragmentation there is.

Please share with your pals too!

Turns out that when you start to zoom in on the 3D model, you start to see where you fucked up the details of the model.

😬

pb,
@pb@chaos.social avatar

@xeophin This sounds familiar! I worked on a 3d project before I went on paternity leave and the hardest part may have been finding a balance between “who cares, no-one is going to see this anyway” and “let me just grab the calipers and measure the diameter of a door handle in the real world”.

pb,
@pb@chaos.social avatar

@xeophin Oh yeah! “I could just build model these stairs, shouldn’t take more than fifteen minutes. Or I could teach myself how to do it with Geometry Nodes and I’ll have them ready by next week 🤔”

pb,

@xeophin So, how’s your Geometry Nodes implementation coming along?

pb,

@xeophin Oh, that sounds neat! If I’ve learnt one thing about Blender, it’s that there’s always a way. Usually half a dozen ways, actually.
