Also as for my comments about DB resisting data sharing… what’s the only rail planner app on my phone’s home screen?

DB Navigator

Because - even to some of Germany’s neighbours - it’s actually pretty good.

Imagine DB properly internationalised it. It’d be amazing. It’d win out over Trainline or Omio because it’d be better - at least at planning routes.

But DB can’t see that opportunity.

@plonksi@nerdculture.de avatar

@jon
Way back then I tried to figure out the longest possible route it would provide. There were times when the schedule to ulan bator was available in there....

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@plonksi It used to once get you to Syria. 15+ years ago…

remi,

@jon DB Navigator is not perfect in France, but it does show trips with 3+ connections, which SNCF does not want to sell and thus do not exist in SNCF Connect.

@jon Apropos timetabling, I wonder for how long the European Rail Timetable will survive. Sure, it has a great history as Cook’s Timetable, and if you insist on a printed timetable book, there is obviously no competition. But still. I haven’t bought one in several years. Not even the electronic one. Will be kinda sad to see it eventually meet its demise, sure.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@tml I don’t know. I’ve never bought one. I’ve once or twice been given old ones! So I’m not the right person to ask that. I’m not too bothered if traditional timetables on paper die away.

PGLux,

@jon @tml

There should be proper paper timetables, with terms and conditions of each of the operators, and a proper description of their products (with pictures).

crablab,

@jon I'd prefer it if they did some proper open data - I had lots of issues with DB Navigator lying about actual train timings 😅

taseroth,
@taseroth@chaos.social avatar

@jon Right now I have to use Trainline because DB can't properly handle international trains from Germany to X . Testet it when traveling to Paris and Vienna.

Also, buying Tickets from the Android App always get stuck at some point with some generic error, I have to go back and the second time it works. Friend reported the same error.

While overall the App is ok, I would not see it as a role model.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@taseroth err, you don’t have to use Trainline for Paris - Vienna. ÖBB should sell you that. Oh and that’s a mess because it’s France. I don’t think we can blame DB there.

taseroth,
@taseroth@chaos.social avatar

@jon I live in munich, taveling from there. So 2 diverent trips. I used to strugle buying tickets, because DB just ended (at there last step) with an general error. If I remember correctly it was because I tried by a return ticket.

Nowadays I use Trainline for international travels. Works like a charme.

Of course it would be great to buy European tickets without using an external agent.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@taseroth it can work like a charm. Depends where you are in Europe but in some places it proposes odd routes.

apfelj,
@apfelj@mastodon.social avatar

@jon I agree it's pretty good. The thing I'm missing is

  • a check box 'I have a Deutschland-Ticket'
  • letting me specify the maximum amount of time I want to be traveling.
    With that info it could come up with various route suggestions trading travel time against ticket price.
    E.g. I want to go from A to B.
    The direct train takes 3h @ 100€. Splitting the A->B leg into two A->X and X->B takes 4h @ 80€ because X->B is a regional train which is free. Nice feature for people on a tight budget.
jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@apfelj oh there’s much to improve. But it’s still miles ahead of anything else though!

herdsoft,
@herdsoft@gruene.social avatar

@jon You know that DB Navigator is heavily critizised for violation data protection laws DSGVO with trackers?

25kV,
@25kV@mas.to avatar

@jon its the only one I use in France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Chechia, Hungary...

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@25kV Yep. Exactly. Now if it sold you tickets there too… imagine the market.

25kV,
@25kV@mas.to avatar

@jon yep. e.g. its very frustrating that in order to book reservations I have to go through the TOC's website

25kV,
@25kV@mas.to avatar

@jon (should explain that I generally only need a timetabling app, not ticket sales, cos FIP)

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@25kV Sure. I don’t have FIP. But I plan with DB anyway then book with the local operator.

nblr,
@nblr@chaos.social avatar

@jon Curious. Did you try out DB Next? I switched a while ago due to bike ticket reservations but don‘t use if often enough to have an opinion about it yet.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@nblr I’m using both. There are pros and cons to each. I’ve not come to a fixed view!

nblr,
@nblr@chaos.social avatar

@jon One funny quirk in Next I haven’t understood yet. If I order the bile ticket separately, i get a 2nd class ticket for 0.-, if I order it along together with a 1st class ticket I incur a 9€ surcharge.

DB invoice showing 0€

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@nblr it’s meant to be €9 per bike reservation. Regardless of class or ticket. AFAIK.

nblr,
@nblr@chaos.social avatar

@jon I booked two bike tickets seperately for a 1.kl SSP trip with a 6h long "layover" separately for 0€ but the one i booked together with another 1.kl SSP (return) together with the ticket for 9€. Latter bike ticket was booked as 1.kl bike ticket (curious if there is a 1.kl bike rack) and the "long layover" ticket was booked 1.kl with 2.kl bike tickets. This has written "unruly passenger incident" written all over it :) will keep you posted...

nblr,
@nblr@chaos.social avatar

@jon My hunch is that the "reservation" part is missing for the two separately booked tickets. But yet it's a "Fahrradkarte". It doesn't show an empty "Section/Carriage/Bicycle Space" for the booking like the 9€ one.

nblr,
@nblr@chaos.social avatar

@jon It gets weirder and weirder.
The train they "sold" me the 0€ bike ticket for does not have a bike rack according to reiseauskunft. Their hotline claims that I got a valid reservation on both trains and that they indeed have a bike rack.

nblr,
@nblr@chaos.social avatar

@jon End of the story: No bike transportation in these trains. My ticket is invalid and they will not refund. I will have to book new tickets. It is entierly my fault and I should be happy to be transported at all. F.U. DB.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@nblr Take it to a Verbraucherzentrale. They were clearly wrong if they sold you a ticket for a trip they can’t fulfil!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@nblr Ha. What is the train number?

AndreasSebayang,
@AndreasSebayang@chaos.social avatar

@jon The mindset is still very national. I use the Next Navigator in English. It’s weird to see still so many German words in the English section. Even though DB offers a lot of int’l connections. So there is customer demand.

Happens with airlines too BTW. Especially eastern asian airlines sometimes lack proper apps and even websites.

pb,
@pb@chaos.social avatar

@jon Right? DB Navigator is what I turn to whenever I need to plan an international trip, even if it doesn’t go through Germany. If DB could not only tell me how to get from Copenhagen to Bergen but also display a convenient “Purchase Ticket” button next to the itinerary, why wouldn’t I use it?

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@pb Yep. But DB refuses to see that opportunity.
