I've been critical of Newshub and their framing of many social issues in the past, but given the new landscape that's seeing Atlas and US conspiracy-funded shitholes like Counterspin / Groundswell / Platform promoting their own media, it's incredibly concerning to see actual news outlets fold in NZ. We have few enough as it is.

Five years. Five years I managed to dodge that virus until companies convinced governments that things needed to go "back to normal" and schools should get kids back in class at all costs, while loud opinions in the public demanded fewer and fewer measures of protection.
So today I finally ran out of luck and tested positive. Despite masking up and taking every reasonable precaution in the face of overwhelming social pressure.
Fucking furious.

In addition to being done well, it was done quickly. SCOTUS gave them a week. They filed it in 2 days.

Notice that they argue in the alternative: If Trump gets a stay, please expedite the proceedings as with the Colorado ballot case.

If you’re curious about how Icelandic politics are going:

  • The parliament ombudsman has come to the conclusion that freedom of enterprise always take precedence over animal welfare laws and that attempting to enforce those laws against a company is actually illegal.
  • This means that banning whaling is essentially impossible in Iceland
  • So the fisheries minister who attempted to enforce animal welfare law is likely to lose her job
  • Also might mean that the gov might collapse entirely

Down in Oban, Rakiura (Stewart Island) yesterday we waited for our fish and chips order listening to two older (white) locals regaling a visiting couple (from the US) on local (NZ) politics. They were very hard-core supporters of the new gov't. They were spouting utter bollocks about race & simple-minded talking points spouted by Winnie, Seymour, & National. It was nauseating. Couldn't help myself... so I interjected (with a big smile) "uh, some of us here hold a substantially different... 1/n

@lightweight Well done. Small town Aotearoa is certainly well-represented by conservative, regressive interests and these sorts of racist / colonial views are definitely very easy to find. It's useful to have people remind them their views aren't always going to be tacitly accepted.

@strypey @taylorlorenz This is objectively incorrect. As a conference organiser myself (for @devnxt) I've found there is no shortage of diverse and engaging speakers. The challenge is mainly around making the effort to get out of your own circles to find them.
Also if your conference has a "diversity quota", you're already doing it wrong.
