“Mastodon’s onboarding to too hard, I have to pick a server, I am so confused. Bluesky is so much easier”. Bluesky’s first onboarding screen.

Given the state of the service and the AT protocol, I am not even sure this is possible to do right now, but I hope someone does clear explainer on how decentralization in #Bluesky is supposed to work. If it’s as @rysiek says in this post, folks need to understand what they are getting into with that service. This is ignoring the other questionable things that have come up around moderation.

#Sup, is the kind of thing that can evolve only out of an open federated platform. Hope it’s good, secure and spawns lots of clients, along with integration in existing Fediverse clients.

My timeline is split with folks loving the new Mastodon onboarding(defaulting to mastodon.social) vs people that hate it.

@rysiek Thanks for pointing to this thread and WTF. We really do need a strong Mastodon alternative. GTS has been on my watch list for a long time, along with https://github.com/jointakahe/takahe . Really wanted Takahe to make it since it’s the only one that supports multiple domains. Development has really slowed for it however.

@MonaApp Would it be possible that when a screenshot is taken/shared the image would respect what is being viewed? Right now if media is hidden in the post, but shown in the app, the screenshot will be of the hidden images.

Reading a good many takes that one of the reasons #Meta wants #Threads to join the fediverse, is so they have a way to ban users they don't like, while giving them an escape hatch. To me this means they see the fediverse as a dumping ground for problematic users. They want to offload the admin overhead of these users to us. How are people ok with that?

Imagine if .social was spending all it’s money on full time developers instead of Devops and running a bunch of hardware.

If you’re leaving #Kagi due to the Brave thing, where are you going? I guess it feels different due to the smallness of Kagi and that they want money from you vs ads(you’re still paying). DDG has an existing Brave deal, and Google is not in any way better compared to the issues with Brave, just more faceless.

In June 1999, Larry Page said this about his ambitions for Google: "We think we can make search a lot better than it is now. To do the best job, it requires artificial intelligence. The search engine must understand the question being asked, and understand everything on the Web."

Say what you will about Google, but its goal has always been to have AI running google.com. Except that today's AI doesn't "understand" anything; it's just very good at parroting human words.

@ricmac Having AI understand the question to provide better search results is a good goal. But also having AI provide the results… maybe not.

Hang on, if we don't let Olympic athletes fuck during the games, what is even the point of them spending grueling hours getting good at their sport?

Do you think the Greeks didn't know about wrestling as foreplay??

mcg,
@mcg@social.lol avatar

@Binder I’ve never understood the issue with them having fun at the Olympics. As long as it’s all consensual, what’s the big deal?

A single-user server should not require so many resources to run. 1 vCPU and 1 GB of RAM should be plenty.

mcg,
@mcg@social.lol avatar

@ramsey We need lighter weight services for messaging and the Fediverse.
