As of this morning, 95% of the container ships that would have traveled through the Red Sea are now rerouting around the Southern Tip of Africa.

This map, by Flexport, shows those ships, in orange.

The new recommendations tab on @ivory is pretty good! Really supports the point that some form of algorithmic discovery can be extremely useful for Mastodon.

Here’s to hoping that we’ll get a plugin system for algorithms. Free personalized algorithm choice for everyone.

SARS Cov 2 transmissions typically resulted from exposures lasting one hour to several days. How do we know? Digital contact tracing.

Another Nature paper by the Fraser group. If it weren’t for them, we probably wouldn’t know just what a remarkable tool the world invented during the COVID pandemic.

The bad news? People still think “this tech didn’t work”. It’s still on nobody’s pandemic preparedness plan.

But with more papers like these, one day, it will. Hopefully

I‘m committed long term to the idea of Mastodon and the Fediverse.

Undoubtedly, what is happening at Threads is the biggest event in the Fediverse in a long time. This can go either way… but whichever way it goes, I want to be there to watch it: marcelsalathe@threads.net

(I know, I’m incredibly popular there right now 😅)

marcelsalathe,

I’ll keep posting here.

This is my home. This is open source, decentralized - truly the Fediverse.

This is the one place that I trust to not lose its way because of wrong incentives.

EPFL researchers just released MEDITRON, a new AI model for medical knowledge 🎉 I've shared a few thoughts on the importance of this truly open AI model here: https://engineeringprompts.substack.com/p/meditron-70b-a-new-truly-open-ai

Why I am here and have zero intention of leaving:

  1. Stellar apps (I’m using ivory)
  2. No ads = no attention economy
  3. Lots of interesting people
  4. Fediverse-compatible

The final point is the most crucial for Mastodon. I wouldn’t be interested in communicating with people via email if their condition was that I use the same email provider 🤷‍♂️

Come work with us at EPFL! The EPFL School of Life Sciences is looking for tenure track assistant professor in life science engineering. Topically this is an open search 👇

Bravo! Not normally a fan of the Nobel in times of team science, but in this case it’s truly deserved.

One of the world‘s most brilliant mathematicians, @tao, finds #generativeAI useful in his work.

Dunking on LLMs may be en vogue, but I’m excited to see more and more people discovering the many incredibly broad benefits.

marcelsalathe,

I confimed this on Twitter so you don't have to.

Today was the first time I used my Mastodon address on the opening slide of a conference presentation.

Small step, but brings back memories from when I added Twitter many, many years ago. I remember thinking, this is where I'll hang out in the coming years.

marcelsalathe, to mastodon

The degree to which the ugliness of the default #Mastodon landing page puts off new potential users is highly underestimated.

It was the main reason I didn’t seriously engage with mastodon for years.

My daily interaction with mastodon via mobile apps couldn’t be any more different. To this day, I’m confused for a brief moment when I land on a mastodon page in the browser!

It's time for a re-introduction! 👋

I'm a professor at EPFL in Switzerland, where I run the digital epidemiology lab. Here on Mastodon, I will share what I find interesting and newsworthy, mostly in #science, #tech, and #health. But really, anything to live an examined life 😉

Politics is a strict NO NO for me on this account. I have another, more local (🇨🇭) account where I do comment on local politics (see bio).

I'm a happy @elk and @ivory user and can highly recommend both.

See you around!

I’m followed here by 1000 accounts now. A nice milestone on any social network.

A few observations:

  • while still a far cry from the 20K+ at the ex-bird, I find this to be a vastly better experience. #nevergoingback
  • as elsewhere, the network grows with activity
  • verification is real
  • the user experience (typing this on the Ivory app) is 🔥
  • The “Mastodon police” is largely a myth

Thank you @Gargron and everyone involved in this ecosysem for building something potentially generational.

marcelsalathe,

I’m following ~200 people. Many are not yet actively posting. Those who are, thank you! I find that checking the timeline always yields something interesting.

Thanks to you, this is now by far my number 1 social media go to place. The only other service I use is LinkedIn, where I’m mostly posting (the algorithmic feed is unfortunately mostly crap).

I’d love to see more scientists and engineers over here. Help build a sane, decentralized network. Your content and presence matter.

This seems like a big deal? A roughly 400 m asteroid has an impact probability of 3.4% and was just discovered a few days ago?

https://newton.spacedys.com/neodys2/NEOScan/risk_page/ZTm0038/index_summary_ZTm0038.html

Thankfully the highest probably has already passed, but still… you can check here what the impact would be at the location of your choice: https://neal.fun/asteroid-launcher/
