I hear people say: "Oh, these people shouldn't have bought that car, or that house, or taken on that student loan. They should have known!"

So much can go off the rails so fast. I'll explain.

Let's consider a family that bought a home in the last 4-5 years. These homes had sky high prices.

To afford it, a family goes for an adjustable rate mortgage (ARM) and they get a payment that fits in their budget, but doesn't leave much wiggle room.

Now interest rates are towering over 7% and their mortgage could have gone up $500, $1000, or maybe more per month. Ouch.

They also bought a car during the pandemic because their older one had issues. Dealers charged high markups on cars during this time and they paid over invoice for the car.

Well, now the bank calls and says "Your loan's LTV exceeds 90% and that's too risky. You need to pay down your loan today to reduce your risk or we will come get the car."

LTV = loan-to-value. If the car is worth $50K, the bank will only loan you $45K for it.

So now you're at risk of losing your home (interest increased and your mortgage payment skyrocketed) and now your bank wants you to pay down your car loan to reduce the LTV there.

Wow.

Then you get notified that your student loan forbearance is ending next month.

This enough to send any family budget over the edge. So what do you do?

Sell the car? It's upside down, which means you owe more than it's worth.

Pay down the car loan so you can get to work? Well, there's no money to pay your mortgage then.

Let the bank repossess the car? Sure, but then good luck borrowing money for other things in the near future. Now you can't get to work.

Well, could you move to a less expensive house? Maybe, but not if you owe more to the bank than what your house is worth.

Rent an apartment? Possibly. Rents are still sky-high.

Before you chastise people for their financial decisions, remember that the deck is often stacked against them.

Not everyone has the skills to analyze the impacts of these financial products and financial institutions are more than happy to gloss over those details when it comes time to sign.

Empathize with people and work to change the system that perpetually keeps people in debt. ๐Ÿซ‚

@jwildeboer I understand the desire to get something for free, of course, but if I have the choice of "we try to cobble together all the bits of RHEL we can find and we think we got it all" and "just use CentOS Stream", I'd use Stream.

I remember an interview with the founder and CEO where he was asked why they sell food and beverages on trains so cheap. And his answer was: we're in the business of selling tickets, not in the business of catering, we don't intend to make money on it.

Many of you said "running slower is harder and it will make you faster" and I didn't believe it. I'm starting to believe it now. ๐ŸŽฝ

I tried my hardest to run as slow as I possibly could.

I burned about 5% more calories, finished a little sooner than usual, and did all that in a heat index of 115ยฐF/46ยฐC. I felt out of breath maybe 3-4 times but that usually happens 10+ times in this heat.

Run slower!
