From tomorrow on, I can step in every regional bus, tram, metro, S-Bahn, train all over without having to worry about getting a ticket. The at 49€/month has almost arrived :)

What you see in the picture is the paper version. You can also order and use it digitally in an app, if you prefer. I went with the physical card option, but that will take a few months to be rolled out. Until the card has arrived, I get this monthly PDF that I can print out or store on my mobile phone.

The #ActivityPub standards that’s behind #Mastodon has no notion of #cw content warnings. Mastodon decided to use the subject field for that. Not saying it’s right or wrong, but this decision makes interoperability a problem.

Being a good public speaker, lesson #42. Whenever there’s a question from the audience, repeat the question before answering. Your microphone is open. The audience one might not be. And repeating the question gives you some extra time to come up with a good answer. It’ll also be appreciated by your remote audience.

ez-cookie needs 302 clicks per session. 302. Clicks. Per. Session. That's outright abusive, IMHO, and shows you how they really try everything to make it difficult for you to express "No, thanks. I don't want to be tracked".

Both #Bluesky and #Twitter will focus far more on monetisation than on decentralisation. They need confrontation and provocation for that. If we, the #federati, understand that and avoid that black hole, we can build something that lasts. That stays. That grows. That's my sincere hope.

Everything I hate about Twitter is currently on Bluesky. I hate the memes, the trolls, the algorithms.

I realize my brain doesn't function like most other people. I'm wired a different way.

But generally, when I see an "ayyy lmao", I don't think that bodes well for a social media platform.

@atomicpoet I see it a bit more positive. The clout hunters will always flock to centralised services. ActivityPub services organically attract and facilitate communities of practice. A different target audience, which is a good thing, IMHO.

#Mastodon has an interesting feature to mute an account for a few hours or days (I regularly use it when soccer games are on ;).

What would be interesting to have is a time-limited follow for accounts. Some new accounts might turn out to be boring bots or post never again. If I could follow for, say, 14 days or a month and after that I’d get a popup asking “do you want to make the follow permanent?” — that would be really cool! cc @Gargron

#BILD war schon immer ein Blatt von Ewiggestrigen für Ewiggestrige. Das viele das als konservativ bezeichnen ist der größere Witz, IMHO. Conservare, in Latein, steht für erhalten, bewahren, beobachten. Was diese Krawallbrüder und Schwestern absondern hat damit nichts zu tun. IMHO.

#BlueSky is a step backwards for #Decentralisation. It'll be another walled garden with power concentrated at the admin level instead of the user being in control.

Just as with #Mastodon, the focus will be on scalability of a few really big instances, instead of creating an environment that fosters a network of many small instances.

There's a reason that I have a single user instance since many years. I strongly believe that a better balance of power is possible and achievable for #ActivityPub

It may need some fundamental changes to #ActivityPub mid-term. The federated architecture is deeply embedded in the protocol ATM. Conway's Law strikes again ;) The next iteration should move further away from federation and more towards true decentralisation. I'll blog about some thoughts on that over the weekend and welcome input and reactions!

Some initial thoughts: The next iteration should decouple user content and instance. Right now your data is not under your control. You can migrate your account to another instance, but the data remains at the old place. If we could find a way where content is more tightly coupled to the user, not the instance, that would be a big step forward, IMHO.
