Over 40 million German citizens vowed to vote for Hitler to rule Germany in 1934… amounting to 90% of the vote.

These were regular people.

The last free and fair election in the Weimar Republic was in November 1932. The Nazis received 11.7 million votes.

This is looks like the November 1933 election. (I double checked, this appears in the November 13, 1933 times).

There was only 1 party on the ballot in 1933, voting wasn't secret, and the no votes and non-votes risked reprisals. There were people forced to vote from concentration camps in that election.

These weren't regular people, these were people voting under threat of reprisal that included implied threat of death.

@KatM Going through the article, this vote was a referendum on whether Germans supported the Nazis pulling out of the League of Nations.

2 million people figured out how to vote no on a referendum that didn't include a negative option.

@KatM There's a big difference between voting under duress and a free vote.

The history is concerning enough. The Nazis topped out around 37% in free and fair elections and 43% in elections where they were physically attacking people at the polls.

It doesn't require a majority to take a country over the edge.

If you haven't read it, check out Umberto Eco's essay on Ur Fascism. His basic thesis is that fascism always lies about what it is and what it's doing, so it's hard to pick red flags or markers and say, "that's it." Instead, he digs into the thoughts and beliefs that drive a fascist movement - anti-intellectualism, anti modernism, external enemy... all the things that make fascists tick.

It won't make you feel better (probably worse in terms of parallels), but it does help when you're talking to someone that says the absence of red flags means a movement isn't fascist.

The fact that you can follow the president of the United States (@potus) from your Mastodon account instead of being forced to have an X or Threads account for it is a huge W in my book. Of course our team is fully available to help if they'd want to set up Mastodon on whitehouse.gov. I believe governments should not rely on 3rd party platforms to connect with their constituents.

The only reason it wouldn't work is if your instance has defederated from threads, but that's your instance, not mastodon.

The inside jokes make the show for me, like Rutherford pointing out Nick Locarno looks like Tom Paris, or when Shaxs comes back to life. They even mock Lower Deck's dialog and pacing in Those Old Scientists.

When you run into those people that “don’t believe in climate change,” you can tell them two of the largest shipping companies and the world’s largest transshipment port are already dealing with what they don’t believe in.
