Why Does the NYPD Hate This Bike Chain
https://www.404media.co/email/1cc25606-201a-4f10-87ce-aeefa8285c3f/?ref=daily-stories-newsletter

'“This is not what students bring to school,” Sheppard said, holding the chain to the camera. “These are heavy industrial chains that were locked with bike locks, and this is what we encountered on every door inside of Hamilton Hall.”

'But this is exactly what students bring to school, and it’s a bike lock chain that’s recommended to them through the Columbia University website.'

@ai6yr Are you still in the market for a bike light? I recently ran across this: https://luxebiking.com/collections/all/products/zynon (maybe via an Instagram ad?) & today was the first dark morning ride I tried it on & it is in fact bright! I've had the predecessor to https://www.serfas.com/shop/products/lights/usm-1000-e-lume-1000-headlight/ for about 6 years but the battery life has gotten a little short & when I saw the Luxe one for essentially the same price I went for it. It's huge & heavy (c.0.75lb!) but effective & seems durable. My first "see" vs. "be seen" light.

Reindeer can activate sleep mode while eating
https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-023-04034-x
“Reindeer can meet digestive and sleep requirements at the same time,” says Melanie Furrer, the study’s first author and a neuroscientist at the University of Zurich, Switzerland.

Like a cow, a reindeer has four chambers in its stomach, and it uses the first to store grass for later regurgitation and chewing — a process known as rumination.

Ancient DNA uncovers past migrations in California
https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-023-03503-7
"Nakatsuka et al. analysed the genomes of individuals from regions of what are now California and Mexico, including the Baja California peninsula of Mexico and the Californian Channel Islands. By comparing the genomes of ancient and present-day individuals, they find evidence of a northward migration from Mexico into central California that happened roughly 5,200 years ago..."

California Department of Justice Declares Out-of-State Sharing of License Plate Data Unlawful | Electronic Frontier Foundation
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2023/10/victory-california-department-justice-declares-out-state-sharing-license-plate
"It is against the law for police to share data collected from license plate readers with out-of-state or federal agencies. This is an important victory for immigrants, abortion seekers, protesters, and everyone else who drives a car, as our movements expose intimate details about where we’ve been and what we’ve been doing."
