If you’re a regular on trains anywhere, get the Railmap app. It’s an app based version of OpenRailwayMap

Some day when you need info, and railway firms aren’t providing it, it’ll save you - as it did for me today in Dijon

iOS
https://apps.apple.com/de/app/railmap-for-open-railway-map/id1374554550?l=en-GB

Android

If the interface is nice it might be worth the tradeoff for the ads for some. But I'm not surprised to find a lot of Libre snobbery in the fedi comments.

Does it have cool features beside the map? Otherwise one could just install openrailwaymap.org as a PWA. (soon also on Apple, thanks DMA!)

#fediverse #FragDasFediverse #Friendica #peertube #Pixelfeed #streams #calckey #firefish #IceShrimp @linux #Hubzilla #social #socialmedia #SocialMedia-Forschung #Mastodon #twitter #rentner #Usabiity

@jeff
mMn sind Mastodon & Pixelfed am nähesten dran an einem "normalen" basic Social Media Interface. Friendica soll mehr an fb angelehnt sein, kannst ja selbst beurteilen. Firefish, SharKey & co. wirken eher an jüngere gerichtet. PeerTube/Mobilizon bedienen aktuell eher Nischen.

Interesting to see two projects take Redis into two different directions:

  • Valkey with a permissive license and industry support

  • Redict with the LGPL and based on Codeberg

Good showcase of different movements within the OS scene, imo.

    #Protomaps, a way to serve vector #maps of the entire world using a single static file and HTTP range requests.

    It’s basically a static site generator for interactive maps. Tile servers are pretty much obsolete now. No database needed, you can run your interactive, smooth-zooming vector map from any HTTP storage. S3, Caddy running on your Wi-Fi router, even GitHub pages.

    Even if the "publish fewer papers" plan for improving academia were possible, it doesn't make any sense to me. Even if there were fewer papers, presumably the same amount of work would get done, and maybe more since it wouldnt be punctuated by so many long writing and revision cycles.

    Whats really the problem anyway? Probably that most results talk past each other and dont build any sort of cumulative understanding. Maybe that we are driven to publish rushed and sloppy work by the prestige economy. I dont see how decreasing the volume of papers while keeping their form and the rest of the system intact addresses that.

    They're different, but for the sake of illustration, is it a problem that there are 150-200k edits to Wikipedia every day? Is it a problem that there are ~8 million pages, the vast majority being very low quality? No. Its because things have a place, and you can find things that are related from any given place. Arguably there should be more edits and more versions of pages bc the stodgy Wikipedia mod class.

    Imagine instead Wikipedia was structured such that every edit had to be a self contained monograph, organized by the moderator that received the edit rather than by the page topic. Then it would really be a problem, and we might be tempted to plead to slow down editing because we couldnt keep up with all the edit monographs coming in.

    IMO too many papers is a symptom of how knowledge disorganization is obscenely profitable. The journal system makes about as much sense as charging for every wiki edit and incentivizing more edits by resisting consensus on a topic. The problem is the form of journal articles and how they're organized, not that there are too many of them.

    Pls brain, we got work due this week. We can't keep thinking about complex mathematical analysis of minesweeper right now.

    jaschop,
    @jaschop@det.social avatar

    @jens There are a bunch of solutions online, that solve minesweeper games just by crunching probabilities and finding a pretty successful strategy just numerically. But I wonder if there is a discrete way to model the involved networks of causality and possible moves.
    You could devise an approach, that takes a minesweeper game state, and tells you if there is a 100% way of solving it. And perhaps you could rig a generator to only generate such games. No more guessing, it would be like Sudoku.
