Mein Freund verbringt voraussichtlich zwei Nächte in München.

I finally got around to joining the @openstreetmap Foundation. The web form to confirm that I qualify as an active contributor was clunky (I got an error message and there was no immediate confirmation email), but it did work. To celebrate, I'll do some more edits today! #OpenStreetMap is awesome.

I just published a very basic introduction to using Boston's bikeshare system data in . IMHO this is a great, underutilized dataset and is especially well-suited for student projects!

@streetsblogmass Very nice. Thanks for sharing. Here in #MadisonWI, our bike share system is privately owned and operated, and so we don't get any data (other than what the operator chooses to publish). I think this is something the city should push for the next time the operating agreement comes up for renewal.

New York Times piece on #Amtrak long-distance #train CO2 emissions. tl;dr: Not great.

@capntransit @Pepijn I'm not sure I follow your argument. Is the point that during the long Amtrak trip you're prevented from producing CO2 in other ways?

"In 2022, cars killed 7,508 pedestrians, the equivalent of 18 fully-loaded Boeing 747s crashing with zero survivors. That means a pedestrian died roughly every 70 minutes, with no breaks in the tide of fatalities for weekends or holidays."

@enobacon @TheWarOnCars I'd like to see a jurisdictional transfer grant program: Cities would apply to take over current state or US highways through their territory, and US DOT makes it financially feasible.

@enobacon @TheWarOnCars I thought there was something in the works to reconstruct the corridor in a better (of course still not ideal) way?

#BRT stations are taking shape on State Street in #MadisonWI. These were scaled down from their original design after business owners raised concerns that they’d be too intrusive. #PublicTransit

Big blog post by @Ice_Cold_Rhino and myself. Back in December, I posted a graph about the spikiness of US pedestrian fatalities right after sunset, based on FARS data. That post garnered a lot of attention, and we did more work to verify that we weren't seeing a fluke and to start exploring possible explanations. Here's the full post, with code: https://haraldkliems.netlify.app/posts/pedestrian-fatalities-soar-just-after-sunset/ I'll share some of the graphs in this thread. (1/

haraldkliems,
@haraldkliems@fosstodon.org avatar

Here's the main graph, similar to what I shared in December. Pedestrian fatalities stay mostly flat in the hours before sunset. But right after they begin to soar, with the peak happening about 20-50 minutes after sunset. Then they gradually decline but remain much higher than during the day. (2/

haraldkliems,
@haraldkliems@fosstodon.org avatar

Around sunrise we see a similar but less pronounced pattern: A spike (but less pronounced than the one around sunset), and then a quick drop and flat line during the hours after sunrise, at a level lower than during the dark. (3/

@kev Blogger (along with GoogleGroups) are two Google products I use and that have been around a long time. And I'm really surprised they haven't been abandoned yet. Migrating my Blogger blog has been on my to-do list, but it just seems like a lot of work (the blog is quite image-heavy).
