I was in a meeting today and I realized something profound

We are currently in a post world

That probably donโ€™t make sense to a lot of people, and I need to think about it more

But hereโ€™s the basics of it

The CVE data is so comically bad, nobody actually doing work can use it. The ID is all we use. We have to look in other databases and collect or own facts

Automated tools rely on sources like , , and . Other than the ID, CVE doesnโ€™t really matter anymore

@joshbressers I have a CVE from like 2 years ago that I was supposed to get the description and stuff updated and never did. Mostly because I don't know how to go about doing that, But unsurprisingly no one has complained so I keep forgetting about it.

@lgehr @joshbressers I'm sure I didn't do it because, like I said, I don't know who to contact to update the CVE.

That said it was probably updated by the person that requested the CVE as that wasn't me. They just requested it on my behalf and then gave me the number.

In the past when I've requested them I had reached out to @joshbressers and @kurtseifried to get them and we did all the documentation and stuff then.

@wimpy True story, I submitted a project to https://nlnet.nl/ whose goal is to fix this and provide a service that I can use in @pidgin 3 and they rejected it without asking any questions.

Haven't gotten to the point of needed it yet for Pidgin 3 but that day keeps getting closer and closer.

That said I've been brainstorming with a friend who did a bunch of work on the openembed stuff in synapse, the python based matrix homeserver which as you would have guessed as a similar issue.

Finally got to meet @pluralistic tonight during a signing for his new book The Bezzle. I just finished the first book in the series Red Team Blues and can't wait to start the next one, even if they aren't in chronological order!

Also if you didn't know he touches base on my work with @pidgin in another book of his The Internet Con:How to Seize the Means of Computation.
