Something I tell my software students a lot when they’re looking for jobs is to remember that a shockingly large number of job descriptions are written by people in HR who have next to zero understanding of the industry, the specific team, or the business need.

All they’ve got to work with is fragments they’ve heard without comprehension, coming to them through a terrible game of corporate telephone.

at my last job the engineers had a lot of feedback on the devops job req that HR wrote up (based on something that a totally different devops manager had written) and we were completely ignored so idk if this is a "teams and managers" problem. maybe in some places it is, but IME we were not allowed not fix the job description to reflect what we actually were doing. unsurprisingly we never managed to hire anyone.

I only wear skinny jeans and I know they're dead af bc I'm a millenial and we're not cool. (not even "not cool anymore", the hipster skinny jeans were laughable when they were popular and everyone was wearing them)

I see high schoolers walking by with their baggy pants and I think they're adorable. in the 90s we did not look nearly as cool as they do.

writing your own weaving software

pros:

  • you can add exactly the features you want
  • generate WIFs without paying buttloads of money

cons:

  • weird bugs
  • pain in the ass
  • doesn't make you cool

anyways this used to be on glitch but it kept running out of memory or something so I just have it running locally now. it's better that way?

so, buddy, I was there, and there was an ambulance that needed to get past us on market street (before we got on the freeway) and you know what happened? we stepped out of the way and let the ambulance through. almost like the whole "you can't protest because what about ambulances" schtick is made up BS

I've been hearing from my (former 🫠) coworkers that everyone is furious about what happened this morning

imo nothing is funnier than watching people step on rakes, and this is a very expensive and stupid rake to step on

but the thing that really makes me feel good is that someone asked pointed and insubordinate questions at the impromptu all hands they had to call to deal with the fallout. my spirit lives on. 👻

Valuable lessons were learned, but not the ones that the mother thought would be learned.🤷🏿‍♂️

  • She learned that millions of Black people haven't been "making it all up" about police mistreatment
  • She learned why US Black folk almost never call the police, for any reason
  • Her son learned that his own mom is not safe. Her lack of understanding of US racism makes her dangerous
  • She's probably going to learn that this does not meet the definition of police misconduct

@jshirley @mekkaokereke as someone who was in a very similar situation (bad bike accident, lost consciousness and some of my teeth) yeah you made the right call.

it is very hard to have any kind of conversation in the middle of a head trauma, and it's not like I could have described where I was or what was happening to 911. I don't remember if cops showed up for me, I think it was just the fire department and an ambulance but obviously my memory is full of holes.

@jshirley @mekkaokereke there is always a risk of "the cops show up and make things worse" and that absolutely happens to Black people in distress. (multiplicatively if they're Black and trans - people have died because the EMTs wanted to laugh at them instead of getting them care)

at the same time, when there's blood everywhere you make that call. it is a roll of the dice, as shitty as that is. you can stick around and provide bystander support to weight the odds in your favor. be a witness.

@jshirley @mekkaokereke when I got out of the hospital that night and told my parents about the fun adventure I had they wanted me to go take some homemade applesauce or jam (these are my mother's gifts for people she really likes) to the person who called for me, because they probably saved my life. unfortunately I do not know where they live because, you know, head trauma. so I'm paying it forward I guess. you did the right thing.

@mekkaokereke @jshirley it is absolutely not a decision we should have to make! I was lucky, the firefighters that scraped me up were rude but not hostile. I was a dumbass going down a steep hill with flaky brakes and I kept repeating myself and my first memory is being mad that they were making fun of me (for my incredible series of bad decisions no doubt).

but they did their jobs. "will the emergency responders be too racist to do their jobs" just isn't a question anyone should have to ask

I am planning a new linen sweater and I am arranging my color palette so I can make some plans. Rosie is here to help, because of course she is.

this yarn is from colourmart, I love their wind-it-yerself bargain bin. I think it's a fun challenge to start with a limited set of colors. left to my own devices I only buy jewel tones, but my clothes are mostly neutrals so buying a mix of both is perfect for me (and cheaper too!)

something I didn't know when I started weaving was that washing a piece of handwoven fabric is ✨magical✨

the yarn is asleep on the loom, but when it hits the water it wakes up and swells and wiggles and settles into place. it's the most fun you can have while doing laundry.
