So I'm pretty sure in the neighborhood I saw a Tesla Model 3 that had meticulously, intentionally had all Tesla logos removed from it

chetman,
@chetman@hachyderm.io avatar

@mcc Ive seen “cleaned” Teslas here.

There’s a no-logo aesthetic with some car people, and you even order some high-end cars with no badging, but somehow I think the Tesla unbadging is about something else.

@mcc I admit I am surprised you can get passable churros in Canada.

@thomasfuchs @codinghorror Sadly they did not.

Size is a big reason why Palm flourished and Newton died, along with desktop sync (which Newton had initially and then abandoned) and of course cost (Palms were 1/3 the price).

The foundational tenet of "the Cult of Mac" is that buying products from a $3t company makes you a member of an oppressed ethnic minority and therefore every criticism of that corporation is an ethnic slur:

https://pluralistic.net/2024/01/12/youre-holding-it-wrong/#if-dishwashers-were-iphones

This actually says something about cultural continuity because back in 2004, when Apple was a roughly $3Bn (not $Tn) company, it really was a minority pursuit in a sea of Windows, universally oppressed by corporate IT departments! It only shifted after iPhone ...

chetman,
@chetman@hachyderm.io avatar

@cstross This is pretty ahistorical given the broad adoption of OSX by devs in the early 2000s.

chetman,
@chetman@hachyderm.io avatar

@cstross Your point is still weak. MS Office apps, for instance, were already using compatible file formats on both platforms by the turn of the century.

chetman,
@chetman@hachyderm.io avatar

@cstross No. right thread; same point.

Mac use wasn’t a weird cult. It was pretty mainstream much earlier than your post suggests.

A process:

1950s-1990s: Queer people are excluded from mainstream spaces; create their own, alternative spaces (bars, magazines etc).

2000s-2010s: Queer people are now included in mainstream spaces. Stripped of a specific motivation for existence, dedicated queer spaces die off.

2020s: Queer people are now excluded from mainstream spaces again. Dedicated/alternative queer spaces begin to re-emerge (but weird, bc in a parallel development non-online spaces have been killed by high-rent blight)

@chetman@hachyderm.io avatar

@mcc I’ve lived and/or worked in Montrose since the mid 90s and have absolutely watched this happen.

VERY few of the queer-coded businesses that anchored Montrose are still here.

    Often I find people making fun of things moving into the browser rather than just running as software but the fact is the browser increasingly works better than my regular OS. Like in my experience Linux works universally quite poorly at most GUI things I want to use it for, Android works a bit better than that, & Chrome works much better than that. Chromebooks would sound like a great idea to me if only I trusted Google (and if I didn't believe everyone developing ChromeOS is using a MacBook)

    In Memorium: The Surly Cross-Check, Discontinued After 24 Years

    After over two decades, Surly moved the Cross-Check frameset from their standard lineup of bikes to the ‘Legacy Lineup’ of their website. Surly confirmed that the bike is no longer in production and is unlikely to come back.

    If you haven’t owned this gravel/cyclocross/touring/whatever bike yourself, you likely know someone who has. The Surly Cross-Check was the egalitarian choice in cycling, simultaneously someone’s utilitarian dream bike that was attainable and sold at a fair price.

    The end of the Cross-Check marks the bike’s reign as the most bike that ever biked, the go-to way to make a pile of parts you hoarded in the corner of your garage into a functioning bicycle, and the defacto option that a bike nerd could happily ride and recommend to their non-bikey friends all the same.

    @tk @cycling @mastobikes @mhoye Aw, dang. I rejoined the cycling world 12 or 13 years ago on a black Cross Check. I loved it unreservedly, and kept it in my garage for years after I rode it regularly— it got displaced by lighter, shinier bikes — mostly out of sentimental reasons.

    I finally sold it last year to a math grad student who rides it nearly every day.

    Got a question because I'm useless at business. I get a lot of emails from companies asking me to do webinars, interviews, be a podcast guest, etc. They never mention any payment (not just no payment amount, but no mention of it being paid at all). Then when I don't reply, they follow up later with "btw we can pay you" and it's always phrased like they simply forgot to mention that in the initial email. I understand me being responsible for negotiating my rate, but having to negotiate getting paid at all? Is this the norm or is this just unserious companies trying to see first if I'll work for free and I'm better to just not engage at all with them at all?

    chetman,

    Ran into the roots of one of the PNW’s ancient ghost spruce forests last week. These particular trees either went under in a big subsidence during a Cascadia fault slip or by slow encroachment—there are dozens of ghost forests with different characteristics, and the whole phenomenon is pretty dramatically under-studied. Big storms in the 90s revealed a bunch of them, including this one. They’re pretty spooky.
