Today is a big day... getting my gas range replaced with induction. Chuffed, as they say.

Used to live in a place with one, then had to switch to gas, and let me tell you, it's real hard to go back to anything else after induction, but especially gas.

About a third of the way into the brilliant HOW INFRASTRUCTURE WORKS by @debcha and I appreciate the wonder at energy storage, a subject in which I've been lucky to make a career.

Also very much appreciate her eloquent debunking of the desirability of off grid living. At first the independence sounds like freedom, but in reality it's just doing more work by yourself. (And only so long as your tech functions!) True freedom is what we build together.

Insulting and bullying people into returning to the office is always a bold choice, no matter if you're a CEO or a mayor.

To my shame, I've only recently caught on to how amazing loaning ebooks and audiobooks from a local library and Libby/Overdrive are. Checked out something that's been on my reading list a long time and put some things on hold and it's a great addition to drive time or doing the dishes. If we have to suffer through time in a metal box or do chores, it might as well be packed with learning and/or entertainment.

Feels fortuitous that on a day when I got such great career news, I also learned about this from LinkedIn (in which I don't often find much valuable).

I'm going to put it out there that I'm opening my door for an policy for anyone wanting to chat about pursuing a career in climate.

If you're considering working in climate but not sure what that looks like, please DM or comment.

More enshitification. DropBox adds to the OpenAI data vacuum all your files unless you opt out. Having the pipe is one thing. Having it be opt out and not even telling users about it makes me furious.
Dropbox spooks users by sending data to OpenAI for AI search features

bluegreenandfree,

@hankg News of this convinced me to give up Dropbox for good. I hadn't even heard of the opt-out shenanigans yet.

Fun... not only did we lose Net Neutrality, but apparently we've lost Postal Neutrality too. And it's not even that USPS is private and Amazon has to pay them extra for prioritization, they just are so big that they get to tell USPS what to do.

Also goes to show that no private company really can or is willing to even try to compete with USPS for rural service- public services are indispensable.

The thesis in the latter half of this article that maybe we shouldn't be trying to recreate the gas refueling experience with EVs isn't unsound, and is compelling. But I think there's more context to be had here.

For one, oil major adoption of EV charging is a lagging indicator. They primarily got us into this mess, so we should never expect them to lead on solutions (though we damn sure better try to hold them to account).

Just finished an unplanned re-read of Peter Watts’s marvelous “Blindsight.” Third or fourth time. Accidentally read the first page on my way to another book, and that was that.

One of my favorites. HTML, epub, and pdf all available here: https://rifters.com/real/Blindsight.htm

bluegreenandfree,

@mcnees Fantastic book. An all time favorite ever since one of my professors recommended to me.

One of the great joys of is just being able to both live your life and get work done, without either interfering with the other.

Need to get to the bank, which can only ever be done during business hours? No problem, run out over lunch or during a slow period. Need to have a contractor out for something quick that takes 20 minutes? Answer the door, pay them when they're done, and off you go, spending the equivalent time of a bathroom break.

Nearly every day I see something that reminds me how fortunate I am to not only work fully remote, but also to work for a company that has never once tried to force me into the office.

It would not be "back", as I was hired fully remote. Fortuitously, my position was planned as remote even before COVID, then lockdowns happened, and my employer has continued not only allowing remote and hybrid work, but even expanding it in some departments.

bluegreenandfree,

That Clearlink thing though... that was next level. For so may reasons. The dog thing was notably inhuman but there were plenty of problems before that, from abusing employee trust to the insane sexism.

bluegreenandfree,

Unfortunately, corporations do not operate on a "consent of the governed" model but cases like the Clearlink guy make a really good case for why they should.
