I've been testing countdown widgets all week, so I have a number of pages setup with WWDC Keynote countdowns…one of 'em just ticked over to 100 hours (😳).
Starting to get into that really fun nervous excitement phase.
So now SpaceX, with no working spacesuit, and years behind on it's multi-billion dollar moon lander, is lobbying NASA to go to the Hubble Space Telescope.
"A successful private mission could improve Hubble's ability to point at celestial objects and, by boosting its orbit, extend its life by years... however, an accident could leave the multibillion-dollar telescope broken — or, even more tragically, tethered to the dead bodies of the astronauts sent to repair it."
@mastodonmigration@siracusa While StarLink and other satellites are definitely an issue with any telescopes they are far from the main issue for Hubble. The fact that it’s instrumentation and pointing abilities are at constant risk of failure in many many ways in addition to its orbit constantly falling are the main issues. Boosting the orbit would buy it time and help preserve it as a museum in orbit when it eventually dies instead of burning up in the atmosphere.
@mastodonmigration@siracusa It’s easy to place blame in one place but issues are rarely so cut and dry. And separating Elon Musk from any discussion is fraught at best, but StarLink is a benefit for millions of people all over the world to have access to high speed internet or just internet at all. And there are ways to remove satellite tracks from telescope long exposures that have been used for decades. Problems are solvable, just because they’re new doesn’t mean we should stop moving forward
@Pyrrhlin I don’t think that the dust is going to affect the magnetic fields because the dust is such an incredibly tiny amount compared to the earth itself. The dust could have affects on the climate but that hasn’t been studied much.
Again while it is something to think about it’s just such a tiny amount at the moment that it’s a tiny effect on a system we have other huge levers we need to use to change how we are impacting the earth and climate.
@mastodonmigration
I am a huge space nerd, I have read a lot about it and discussed it a lot in the https://Off-Nominal.com Discord. What I’m saying doesn’t contradict anything. Yes there are problems but there are also solutions. There has been a lot of people causing alarm about satellite tracks but there’s been a lot of progress in reducing those and in removing them from exposures.
I also don’t appreciate you assuming that I’m not well versed in these topics. Assume the best
@mastodonmigration It seems like you’ve made up your mind on this and aren’t having a debate in good faith so I’m going to step away from this conversation.
But to clarify:
I never said anyone thought it wasn’t a problem.
There are ways to work around the issue. This isn’t the end of ground based astronomy, they will persevere through this problem.
The gains for people without any internet access prior to these constellations is monumental
@Iconfactory Pulse is showing an incorrect amount of iPhone storage usage on my phone. You can see that Pulse shows 97% usage, iPhone Settings shows 194/256GB used and Launcher correctly shows 54GB free
As an Apple shareholder, I wish Apple wouldn’t push for services revenue. How much better of a company would they be, if it was mostly about selling cool devices that everybody wanted to use? Would they make less money? Yes. Would they still be insanely profitable? Also yes!
@jamesthomson I’d rather them make great tech and make me less money but they don’t care about us small investors, they only care about institutional investors.
@jamesthomson I could be wrong but my memory of the videos it looked like the cable that goes from the battery pack to the headset looks like it only has enough pins for power. Hope I'm wrong for developers sakes!
