I'm feeling mildly confident of the Greens winning a bunch more inner-city and inner-west seats in the next Victorian election. The Greens always do well when Labor starts disappointing while in office - and that applies to the federal election next year too.

#AI I tried to automate a task at my volunteering today using chatgpt. We had a list of words representing activities, some with counts against them as in merchandise (2). I could easily get it to count the number of times a word appears. But no way of getting it to do the (2) measure. I think this is typical of a lot of activities and illustrates what you need to get to the next level.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a report that transforms how the world understands respiratory infections like COVID-19, influenza, and measles.

Motivated by grave missteps in the pandemic, the WHO convened about 50 experts in virology, epidemiology, aerosol science, and bioengineering, among other specialties, who spent 2 years poring through the evidence on how airborne viruses and bacteria spread.

If a respiratory disease spreads through inhalation, it means that people can lower their risk of infection indoors through methods to clean the air, such as mechanical ventilation and using air purifiers, and wearing an N95 mask.

Peg Seminario, an occupational health and safety specialist in Bethesda, Maryland, welcomed the shift after years of resistance from health authorities. "The dogma that droplets are a major mode of transmission is the 'flat Earth' position now," she said. "Hurray! We are finally recognizing that the world is round."

It is no longer Twitter, and it only provides abusive and pornographic value to Australia.

@ki_sekiya @feather1952 for those who say “this is not technically feasible”, yes it is. I am sure a request to China for assistance would be very favourably received

About me. I did a PhD in computer modeling, graduated Monash 1975. Then I worked for Telstra research and Kansai advanced research labs in Kobe, Japan. Joined RMIT in 1993, professor until 2012. I retired. Achievements? Creating Robocup, especially the primary school version. That was amazing

Long night so far.

A call from my sister just after midnight that she’d taken mum to the hospital.

Been holding bedside vigil while sister goes home and gets some sleep. Doctors running tests and whatnot. Morphine for the pain. Machines that go “bing”.

It’s about 4:30am and mum’s snoring with a plethora of tubes and wires.

Eyes are heavy. Chair is uncomfortable. The nurses showed me where I could make a cup of coffee for myself.

good morning sir. You may choose to lock up your $7k e-bike with. $20 Kmart lock. That is your democratic right. The thieves here are not stupid, and they will take yours (10 seconds work) rather than mine (40 minutes work with an angle grinder)

New study confirms what everyone's been assuming: Higher vehicle hoods cause more fatal and serious injuries when they hit pedestrians: https://arstechnica.com/cars/2024/01/higher-vehicle-hoods-significantly-increase-pedestrian-deaths-study-finds/

I see this all the time now & especially noticing it more since I was hit & I don’t know about it being particularly male drivers or not, but people just aren’t taking care. Yesterday taking my friends to the train station,I pulled up for a red light, a truck in the lane next to me just drove straight through - a bloody truck!

[Lawfare] The Chaos at OpenAI is a Death Knell for AI Self-Regulation

If society wants to slow down the rollout of this potentially epochal technology, it will have to do it the old-fashioned way: through top-down government regulation. By Eugenia Lostri, Alan Z. Rozenshtein, Chinmayi Sharma

@jackhutton in the very early stages, the non-profit model makes sense. But we are at the stage of self-regulating the manufacture of jet airliners. We don't do this for a good reason.
