"Guidelines that adhere to the highest standards of infection control might please purists in public health who don’t have to make policies for the real world. However, guidelines that seem to acknowledge that workers often don’t have paid sick leave and emergency child care, and that social interactions are important to folks, are more likely not only to be followed but to engender trust in public health authorities."

That dress is the most’70s print (and A line) that I’ve seen in a long time. Brown, orange, black, white in a mod pop abstraction.

Over the last 3+ decades, I've watched the Republican party bring fascism to the brink of victory again, a mere 60 years after its defeat in WWII.

Aided, hand-in-hand, by the post-communist, mafia-state apparatuses of Russia & China - countries the GOP spent the last 100 years using as bogeymen against US voters who wanted better services from their own national government - & by the multi-national corporations that funded the GOP & were rewarded with dismantling of anti-monopoly & FCC laws.

USelaine,
@USelaine@mastodon.online avatar

@chargrille
The seed of that root likely was Paul Weyrich, founder of The Heritage Foundation, ALEC, and the public facing Moral Majority, giving us Reagan, and insidious monopolies over talk radio networks. (See also: Cal Thomas’s mastery of the monstrous mailing lists, which was not yet a thing.) The ground was fertile for Murdoch to roll in big.

(I just took one class about this in 1982, but it made an impression.)

The 1982 class focused on the recent political ignition of white evangelicals. An early hook was the prospect of losing tax-free status for religious schools. Get all the addresses of all the church members, and the Moral Majority was in business. Politics wasn’t just for the heathens anymore.

I have yet another unpopular opinion.

It’s either a “private lunar lander” or “the U.S. is back on the moon”, but not both.

My grandmother was reportedly not an enthusiastic cook, but she dutifully collected recipes by word of mouth, or by newspaper and magazines. Home economics was required coursework for girls, a century ago. Most cake recipes conclude with “Bake in mod. oven” since they didn’t have temperature calibration.

Here’s one she transcribed called Weary Willie Cake. Looks very free form and adjustable.

    To his credit, he kept the lyrics as she wrote them, with “checkout girl” identifying the POV as female. I don’t remember his name, but I saw he took some heat, and praised the song he had loved since his youth.

    As the songwriter, she gets paid for his cover. ✨

    I got to see her perform live as well! It was an indoor venue in Budapest in 1996 or so, and was a real delight. I remember her laughing and enjoying the show so much. Just her, with no opening act.

    I think the story was meant to conceal the true gender completely to create a stronger punchline on the moment the mother says the name. It’s attributed to Mark Twain.
