Yes, please. Wealth tax now.

I don’t know why we’d stop at 2%, though. Make it a marginal tax rate just like on income tax, and tax anything over €1 billion at 90%. What do we say, 10% on wealth over €100 mil, 20% over €200 mil, and so on upwards?

That would go a long ways to combating the current insane wealth #inequality.

@Brendanjones It is all about punishing those on middle to low incomes and rewarding those with large investments 🙄. It sucks.

Do you ever think about how your dog takes its sweet time picking the perfect spot to poop, and does a little ceremonial dance; then you just carelessly pick up the poop like it was no big deal?

ScotHomestead,
@ScotHomestead@mastodon.scot avatar

@davidho I am sorry you don’t perform the traditional ‘My dog did a shit’ sword dance at the park every time? I do. Obviously. 😬

I’m not a hydrologist, but I”m constantly amazed by how many influential people, when commenting on flooding, and possible solutions continue to pedal a dangerous myth. Rivers are NOT too shallow. Dredging is the last thing we should be doing to speed up flow.

Dredging greatly increases risk of flooding to downstream communities …a selfish act of betrayal of one’s neighbours!

ScotHomestead,
@ScotHomestead@mastodon.scot avatar

@greenaspen Ok I don’t know why you added the # selfish? It’s a huge economic cost to many to allow periodic flooding on their land and the road infrastructure doesn’t make it easy sometimes (often poorly constructed roads encourage field run off and the council and landowners need to work together on that. As someone who has been hand digging Swales, who is pro-beaver reintroduction and who is very committed to your ecological viewpoint tagging others as selfish isn’t going to help.

ScotHomestead,
@ScotHomestead@mastodon.scot avatar

@greenaspen So one selfish person, that’s a good explanation but your hashtag isn’t specific in that way. I read it (as a smallholder) and felt stung - every hour checking if the burn at the back is going to breach my house is a stressful place to be. Even though we are planting and working for ‘slow the flow’ this is an unprecedented amount of water.

ScotHomestead,
@ScotHomestead@mastodon.scot avatar

@greenaspen It so hard to express how stressful having the land flooded is when to ‘strangers’ it seems like nothing. A friend on FB has just posted that she booked a last minute flight to Malta (she lives in the city) to get ‘away from it all’. I took a #NoFlightPledge in 2017 and feel I live with the weather, not against it, but we all share the consequences. And having a twonk on the radio won’t have helped your day - I do get that. I would also like Beavers! One day…

We are almost locked in, as most of the roads are flooded. I'm worried about the road bridge over the river. I have never seen the river this high, and it's not over yet.

River and river gardens under water due to flooding.

ScotHomestead,
@ScotHomestead@mastodon.scot avatar

@oldrawgabbit Yes worried here too. The burn is so high. We have about 3 feet spare atm to keep the house dry and the hills are emptying out into this area with more rain to come. Home made sandbags in place and fingers crossed 🤞 #StormBabet

A burn (small river) flowing full of water right up to the edges of the field and path. The roof of our house can be seen in the far left of the picture.

Further issued for more heavy rain forecast for Friday through to Saturday. For those in coastal areas, high seas also expected. There’s simply no where for the water to go but onto the land.

A flooded stubble field beside the flooded river (on the right of the picture). Grey clouds fade into persistent rain.

ScotHomestead,
@ScotHomestead@mastodon.scot avatar

@Helengraham There’s many people worse off than us. Our potential problem is the burn at the back of the house as long as that doesn’t reach us we should make through.

ScotHomestead,
@ScotHomestead@mastodon.scot avatar

@Helengraham @Clutha The scenes coming in from Brechin are horrendous. I see there’s also local clothing appeals out - people turning up at rescue shelters soaked through and with nothing.

ScotHomestead,
@ScotHomestead@mastodon.scot avatar

@Helengraham @Clutha Last night I left my birds out to find their own shelter - doing the same tonight. I think their native wit is better than my available care atm. But the dog sleeps in a dog cage and if the Fernie Burn does break in the night we’ll need to be quick to let him out. I don’t think he’s going to settle if I don’t do his bedtime routine as normal.

My experience so far . The wind has been very challenging. And the ground is flooded in places and completely saturated everywhere else. 1/4

ScotHomestead,
@ScotHomestead@mastodon.scot avatar

2/4 The small hen run has taken a bit if a pounding but my OH is upstairs in bed wit sciatica and I can’t move this herris fencing myself against the wind so it will just have to stay as is today. I didn’t shut the #chickens in last night so they weren’t trapped if it did come down.

ScotHomestead,
@ScotHomestead@mastodon.scot avatar

The roof has been ripped off the smaller #duck house - it is lying to the back right of this picture, a good few feet away. 3/4

A close up of the same duck house showing an exposed pallet and the reinforcement wire. The ends of screws stick out, now revealed by the roofing coming off.

ScotHomestead,
@ScotHomestead@mastodon.scot avatar

4/4 The ducks themselves are doing ok. They swam over to get their breakfast! I did have to paddle in to get the dishes though. #soaked through again but at least everyone is ok.

@simon_brooke Get well soon! OH has been laid up 3 days - hoping he’s going to get better soon too.

Wild here today just beginning please don’t travel in North Fife, Angus and the Mearns unless your journey is essential, you are prepared for a detour, and never drive into flood water. 1/3

ScotHomestead,
@ScotHomestead@mastodon.scot avatar

2/3 our homemade sandbags are holding out - the weight of rain and southerly winds are driving water into the concrete area at the back of the house which is then coming in under the utility room and storeroom doors. The boiler is in the storeroom so it would be nice if it stayed dryish. Main house ok, and should be so. 🤞

The exterior of a red door in a whitewashed wall with more home made sandbags on the lintel. Leaves and water being driven against the door lie on the ground.

3/3 on a lighter note, we had a walk! On my third set of clothes for the day. A thoroughly wet dog too. Not my best selfie! 😂 but one! .
