The #LabourParty seems to be feeling its way towards a workable policy on the staffing aspect of the #NHSCrisis;

They seem to be exploring student debt forgiveness for #nurses & #doctors entering the service (with a form of 'golden handcuff' condition of minimum length of service)... its a relatively simple but effective route to address at least some aspects of the #NHS' problems.

A key Q. is whether this might also work in other parts of the #publicsector suffering recruitment problems?

@ChrisMayLA6 They need to return to schools of nursing based at teaching hospitals where students are paid in training, and grants and subsitance allowances for other medics and in return they should sign a contract to work exclusively for the NHS for ten years after qualification.

Grants system should also apply to other sectors where there is a UK shortage.

Three things arrived from United States since the 1970s that we could do without. Firstly, mugging. Secondly, American Style Halloween. Kids over here think it's an excuse to go begging for money. Third, the Prom dance. It's psychologically damaging to many if they can't get a date, or if they are LGBT+, or are socialy awkward.

Please take them back and hide them away. Oh and take chewing gum with you please.

And in the UK, the school leaving age is 16 (in some cases for those born in July or August it's 15.75.

@shekinahcancook It's a bit crazy here in Education. We have Nursery (kindergarten) from 3-5yr, then infants from 5-7, then Juniors until 11, then High School until 16 (although a few allow you to stay until 18, but some prefer the free-er atmosphere of Further Education (up to any age), and some go on to University (from 18 to any age).

A US Public school is known as State School here. A public school here is a private school in US.

    @HelenG Yep, I'd 3 years and 2 months past retirement, but still got three years and four months until new retirement and body has been knackered and falling to bits for ten years. Healthy Life Expectancy where I live is 54, in Kingston upon Thames it's 76. Governments of all shades ignore HLE when making its decisions on retirement.

    There is just one thing Starmer has to say to stop the sell off of our NHS to the Americans. That is, "We will renationalise without compensation" and actually mean it. It would put off any potential buyers.

    Ever since the World Wide Web was invented in 1989, big business has tried to monetise it. The web isn't there's to monetise. That's why the small web such as the instances of mastodon are so much better. Nobody is worried about the ordinary person trying to make some pin money, or selling a wardrobe or something. But you don't get the likes of Tesla, general Motors, and other giant corporations trying to squeeze every last penny from you.

    @helenczerski Smoking on planes led to fresher air because they had to filter it more often, but it used fuel. Banning smoking on planes led to increased profits for airlines but staler air.

    One thing that people aren't remembering about nexy year General Election in UK and polling are the boundary changes that benefit the tories even more. In general it takes an average of 38,000 votes to elect a tory, 45K to elect each Labour MP, quarter of a million for a lib dem, and about 1.5 million to elect a Green MP. These bboundary changes are set to remove mainly Labour and SNP seats and give more to tories, so popular vote may not tie with actual number of MPs per party.

    @w7voa It's about time the veto was banned unless it applies only to the country making the veto, or b better still, abolish the security council altogether and make all resolutions via general assembly.
