I’ve got my Amiga 1000 setup today with something special. This is the Frame Grabber from Progressive Peripherals and Software (PP&S) and it’s a video frame digitizer that connects to the Amiga over the parallel port. It can create images up to 640x480 in 4096 colors, which was a big deal in 1990.

@paulrickards not too often you see people rocking an Amiga 1000, they're the unloved black sheep of the amiga family. I got myself an American A1000 and popped a Vampire 500+ inside, along with an internal gotek and a pico PSU replacement. Cool, cool stuff.

@Daojoan You have to be unbelievably privileged as fuck for there to be no effective difference between a trump and biden presidency. Like ten degrees away from anything remotely of consequence. Trump is literally campaigning on knocking on my door in my city because of my skin color, without hyperbole.

@SirTapTap Yeah, Dead Space Extraction. That was from the era where the Wii was getting all these pretty cool horror game spin-offs, like Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles.

Last september, my #landlord decided to double my #rent, effectively kicking me out of my #home of 11 years. I fell into #depression. Luckily my parents own a plot of #land, and thus, with my dads help, i set off to build a #tinyhouse without rent. After 4 months and several tens of thousands of dollars of materials (which i raised by selling old #videogame collectables), i am ready to move in.

This thing is fully #offgrid. I use a #composting #toilet to do my business, which then goes into the small #garden on the right. I have a #rainbarrel to catch #rain water for my #water system, which is #filtered by rocks, to shower and stuff. I am in the process of building out a #solar system to #power the thing (my solar system should cost about $2000 to build out). My family owns this #land, so no rent. I have brought my living expenses down by thousands per month.

This is still upsetting to me, i feel like its a step backwards to move into a 100 sqft tiny home, especially this late in life. But i cant lie how excited i am to be saving this much money going forward and finally, finally not have to worry about rent or utilities.

At least partially living the dream here.

This is the first time ive ever built something quite like this. Ive built my parents a patio in the past, and done wood work on my arcade machine. But building an entire house from scratch was new to me. My dad was a carpenter when he put himself through night school, so he helped supervise me, but hes 71 so he couldnt really help. This skill will stay with me a lifetime. What an experience.

Dissenting opinion: I think it is perfectly fine to put computers into things, provided that you do so responsibly!

Excessive cost cutting, planned obsolescence, and slapdash design and engineering are what is inexorably transmuting the world around you into complete shit.

Sometimes it feels like people are just equating computing and the internet with corporate profiteering, and then rejecting the former and accepting the later.

@emarktaylor @cfb @slmandel the NCAA sucks, and they deserve to be neutered. In college, you can be "pro" while receiving scholarship in literally any other field and it's not only ok, but encouraged. I did comp sci paid internships while receiving grants and scholarships, and the university was giddy about it. The idea that broke-ass kids don't own their own image and name while the NCAA makes billions is as crooked as it gets. Burn it all down.

@emarktaylor @cfb My brother-in-law was a pitcher for Texas A&M in the 90's. He's so, so stupid. He bitches constantly about how the NCAA screwed him out of money, BUT he's against the NIL because "if I didn't get paid, these kids shouldn't either otherwise it's unfair to me."

@Hundstrasse For YEARS I thought soldering was just extremely hard to do, until I realized the problem was my tools. I was using those cheap $10 irons from radio shack, the kind that oxidize instantly, and they made the job so much harder. The day I bought an actual soldering station, everything became so much easier. I went with a $300 Xtronic station and never looked back.

@Hundstrasse Thats precisely why I held off on buying a real soldering station for so long. What I found is, after I had it, I suddenly found myself much more willing to find actual projects to use it with. Got me into PCB manufacturing, then made me buy an oscilloscope, and now, about 8 years later, my skills are completely different and I find myself soldering/building lots of things.
