Personal note: My regulars know I travel up/down from Calif (where house is) to BC, Canada (where we we got perm resid, lease a townhouse) 6x/yr for a mo. at a time. We split time bc 97 yr old father in law needs us in Calif. He's sharp, but has suffered from congest heart failure for yrs.

He's been weakening over the past wk, nothing imminent, but we're concerned, so we're abruptly cutting our BC trip short, leaving for CA tomorrow instead of 10/26.

💔He needs us.

Posts will reflect this.

    Of course Republicans immediately started to spin some way to blame Biden. They have no shame but trafficking in partisan screed off of a tragedy is the lowest, lowest of political slime.

    The latest nonsense is that Biden "gave" Iran $6 billion and that is what triggered the situation. The money has not been utilized at all. It was Iran's own money. There is plenty in Iran to criticize, but this particular lie is straining at gnats for a cheap political accusation.

    CharJTF,
    @CharJTF@a11y.info avatar

    @TonyStark And...the money was first allocated during TFG's administration; the money is currently in Qatar; the US will be monitoring the money to verify it's only being spent on specific things (like food and medicine, IIRC).

    Republicans (well, too many of them) are all-in on party over country.

    @TonyStark I keep hoping the moderate Rs in the House decide to back a more reasonable Speaker than Scalise and Jordan.

    Of course, it would also be good if more Rs spoke out against the lies, but I believe they're scared of the repercussions.

    But the whole "sharing sub secrets"? How can they not see what issues will arise because they're not speaking up?

    And my right hip has been replaced 🙂

    Other than an issue with the operating rooms (something happened that put them all out of order for almost an hour...my surgeon was not pleased), everything went well.

    I had a different reaction in recovery this time because I couldn't stop shivering. I think I had nine warmed blankets on me by the time I got done. And then I slept.

    I've met with PT and I'll be using a walker for the next six weeks. After that? I should be good to go 🙂

    In her usual masterful way as an accomplished historian, Heather Cox Richardson recounts today what led up to the KKK bombing of Sixth Street Baptist church in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1960, and the deaths of four Black girls.

    The bombing took place five days after Birmingham schools were integrated. The recognition of equal rights for Black citizens unleashed a torrent of hate that led to monumental acts of violence.

    @wdlindsy I'm reading "You have to be prepared to die before you can begin to live" about civil rights in the 50s and 60s. I'm in the section about the children's marches in Birmingham but haven't gotten to the bombing yet. (I'm about halfway through).

    CharJTF,
    @CharJTF@a11y.info avatar

    @wdlindsy I'm enjoying it (as much as I hate what they went through), and it's fascinating.

    Long read but good.

    CharJTF,
    @CharJTF@a11y.info avatar

    @wdlindsy I finished it last night. It stops just after the Civil Rights Act, so before the church bombing. And the the last 10% or so are notes.

    I found it fascinating and learned so much that I never knew. (I lived in upstate NY then and was 6/7.)

    @wdlindsy I'll do that! I'm currently reading

    @ppatel I love dried cranberries! I add them when I make Brussels sprouts (along with a little maple syrup and rice wine vinegar...and bacon because we're not vegetarian or vegan). The guys love it.

    @ppatel I'm not sure it's possible to explain the bacon obsession 🙂 We eat a lot of it in August and September after the tomatoes start to ripen 😋

    @CharJTF@a11y.info avatar

    @ppatel Yeah, I'm that way with scallops (and it hasn't gotten any better, much to Jesse's disappointment when he asked why I never cooked scallops).

    Should you ever come to visit again, I promise not to make bacon while you're here 🙂

    Heat Pumps Really Bring the Heat During Those Cold Dark Winter Months, Study Says

    @br00t4c They are expensive. We paid $25K for ours.

    However, the alternative was to replace the A/C compressor and the oil tank...which would have cost us $35K.

    And this is why we did it.

    My hip replacement is scheduled for a week from Thursday (21 Sept). At last week's pre-op with my surgeon, I learned because my femur has thinned, this recovery will be slower than when the other hip was replaced in March 2020.

    I'm getting a slightly different device, and I have to use crutches (no cane) for six weeks after to prevent issues.

    Crutches. I've never had to use crutches before 😂 (I only broke my toes).

    This is gonna be fun. (Not.) But hey, I'll be spending a lot of time reading!

    @gdinwiddie Thank you! 💜

    The good news is that I work from home, although the backpack might still come in handy. (I can carry snacks!)

    My son and I have been brainstorming the cup issue...I have to have my tea in the morning :-) I have water bottle covers with straps, so I was going to see if any of our lidded mugs would fit.

    Did you shower during that time or take baths? I haven't quite figured out how that's going to work yet. I typically only take showers.

    CharJTF,
    @CharJTF@a11y.info avatar

    @gdinwiddie Yeah, leg surgery is good for learning one-legged support. And I can stand for awhile on my left leg now...I just need to get better.

    It never occurred to me to take the crutches into the shower. Duh 🤣

    Thanks!
