This week, a science team announced the discovery of JADES-GS-z14-0, a galaxy that existed just 290 million years after the big bang. JADES-GS-z14-0 now holds the record for the most distant known galaxy, with redshift z=14.32.

The discovery is based on spectroscopic measurements made using the Webb telescope of light from this distant galaxy that has traveled for over 13.5 billion years.

Yesterday was the hottest day ever recorded in Delhi.

Until today.

And by 3 degrees.

@mpesce
The 52.9C reading in Delhi may be incorrect and may be caused by a sensor error.

Here is a statement from the India Meteorological Department -

"The maximum temperature over Delhi NCR varied from 45.2° to 49.1°C in different parts of city, Mungeshpur reported 52.9°C as an outlier compared to other stations. It could be due to error in the sensor or the local factor. IMD is examining the data and sensors."

Fresh volcanic eruptions north of Grindavîk, Iceland.

  • Started at 1 pm local (UTC)
  • Fissure location is similar to Dec 19 and Mar 16 eruptions
  • Strong M4.1 earthquake in the area around 11 am
  • Magma likely in contact with groundwater causing explosions and dark plumes of smoke
  • Grindavík, the Blue Lagoon and the power plant in Svartsengi evacuated
  • This eruption is the most powerful in the current system so far.

One of the fast-moving lava flows from today's eruption seems to be following the westward path similar that of the eruption on Jan 14. It has crossed the main NS road just north of Grindavîk and is getting close to one of the towers of the U.S. Navy Radio Transmitter Facility.

The camera is on a hilltop at Þorbjörn, north of Grindavîk, facing south. See map in post #1 for the location of Þorbjörn.

Update on the volcanic eruption near Grindavîk -

  • Lava flow has thankfully slowed down
  • Below is a map of the extent of the lava flow. The defensive walls (yellow) have worked well to protect Grindavîk.
  • No significant earthquake or explosions since the burst yesterday
  • Grindavík is without electricity, but there is both hot and cold water. No damage to the piping system.

Here is a well-framed aerial photograph of the area from south of Grindavîk looking north.

It shows lava flowing west of the town, thanks to the lava barriers that have been erected around Grindavîk. The radio tower and its facilities are safe too.

The picture was taken by Otti Rafn Sigmarsson, a rescue team member from Þorbirn in Grindavík.

29 May 1953 - Edmund Hillary, an explore and mountaineer from New Zealand, and Tenzing Norgay, the Nepalese Sherpa mountaineer, became the first people to stand on the summit of Mt. Everest, the world’s highest peak.

The pic of Tenzing below was taken by Edmund Hillary using the Kodak Retina 118 camera. The camera is displayed at the Otago Museum in Dunedin, New Zealand.

Interestingly, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of Mt. Everest on Tenzing Norgay's birthday.

Tenzing Norgay was born on May 29, 1914 in Tengboche, Khumbu, in northeastern Nepal.

From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenzing_Norgay - "Although his exact date of birth is unknown, he knew it was in late May by the weather and the crops. After his ascent of Everest on 29 May 1953, he decided to celebrate his birthday on that day thereafter."

Happy Birthday to Frank Drake (May 28, 1930 – Sept 2, 2022), astrophysicist, astrobiologist and creator of the Drake equation, which is used to estimate the number of active, communicative extraterrestrial civilizations in the Milky Way Galaxy.

The equation was formulated in 1961 as a way to stimulate discussion at the 1st scientific meeting on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory site at Green Bank, WV.

Frank Drake wrote -
At the conference, we plugged in our best estimates for each of the factors, and found that the product of the first six factors on the right hand side came out to roughly the value of 1. Thus the value of N seemed to hinge solely on the value of L — how long intelligent, communicative civilizations could survive. At the end of the meeting, Struve offered a toast: “To the value of L. May it prove to be a very large number.”

Frank Drake on the Drake Equation:
"It amazes me to this day to see it displayed prominently in most textbooks on astronomy, often in a big important-looking box.
...
I’m always surprised to see it viewed as one of the great icons of science, because it didn’t take any deep intellectual effort or insight on my part. But then, as now, it expressed a big idea in a form that a scientist, even a beginner, could assimilate."

When Donald Trump met some of the country’s top donors at a luxurious New York hotel earlier this month, he told the group that a businessman had recently offered $1 million to his presidential effort and wanted to have lunch.

“I’m not having lunch,” Trump said he responded, according to donors who attended. “You’ve got to make it $25 million.”

Temperatures in India, like the rest of the world, have been rising due to Climate Change.

India is ranked 4th among the list of countries most affected by climate change in 2015.

This is the 3rd straight year of severe heatwaves in India and the 6th in the last 10 years (see table below).

Temp. rises are also causing Himalayan glaciers to retreat, threatening the flow rate of major rivers.

One of the 3 gyroscopes (probably the same one that has been malfunctioning over the past 6 months) has caused the Hubble Telescope to go into safe mode again.

Only 3 out of 6 gyros have been working since 2018. Hubble can operate with just one gyro at somewhat reduced functionality, if needed.

Too bad the gyros cannot be replaced anymore as was done in Shuttle-based repair missions in 1993, 1999 and 2009.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

It's alive :mastodance:

The JAXA SLIM lander, lying in its awkward stance on the lunar surface, responded last night to a command sent by JAXA. Against all hope, it appears that it survived the cold lunar night.

The batteries were expected to get charged around this time, shortly after lunar midday, since the solar panels are facing southwest instead of up.

Apparently, the temperature of the comm equipment was too high, so comms was quickly terminated. Stay tuned!

No luck communicating with the JAXA SLIM lunar lander this time around, as the Sun sets at the landing site.

They turned the power off overnight and are hoping that "the whole system will be reset and restarted" when it tries to wake up 24 days from now.

Note that the primary mission ended in January. SLIM has lasted this long even though it was not designed to survive lunar nights.
