Ooooh... why did I say I'd use KDE for 2 weeks? Can I shorten that to one?

This is just adjustment pain talking, I know, but wow. I might love how looks, but actually working with it is not fun for me. Nothing works the way I expect it to.

But CO, don't you just mean "meh! nOt GnoMe! mE No LiKeY!"

I mean... yeah. That's what I mean. From the very first time I tried 3 (like, ten or twelve years ago), everything about it has felt natural to me. The changes that have been made over the years leading up to Gnome 45 today have all more or less worked for me. The way it works just meshes with my brain somehow, and it's very comfortable to work in.

Plasma is none of that, and I don't know why I'm putting myself through this. Don't get me wrong: I adore the KDE project. It's a gorgeous, feature-packed, ultimately configurable . The problem for me personally is that I just don't need about 75% of those features, and the default setups don't function the way my brain does.

So in short, I might be cutting this experiment short, not because KDE is bad, but because Gnome feels like home.

Which is weird, because I hated Gnome 2, which I thought of as a more difficult to work with, less resource efficient version of .

Oh, yeah, and ? It's fine. It's super-fine-tuned and dedicated to its mission of being a cutting edge KDE desktop. Which is great if that's what you want, but there's a fine line between dedication and obsession.

I prefer it to dealing with Arch, though, if I'm being honest - specifically because of that obsession. Everything official is tight, works together, and accomplishes the stated goal of the OS. Even the KCP repo is on board for the most part, and it all comes together. If someone did something like this for Gnome/GTK, it'd probably be my OS of choice.

TIL: Extracting OCR text from images using xfce4-screenshooter.

For #Debian: sudo apt install gimagereader tesseract-ocr-eng
Add the custom action gimagereader-gtk %f to xfce4-screenshooter

Going come in very handy for generating alt-text in the future.

Using is interesting. You search for something like "how to make super-key shortcuts work on XFCE" and you get answers like

  • "Here is a 2,000-line script I wrote to fix this. You'll have to figure out how to use it."
  • "Just switch window managers for your OS"
  • "Super key is bloat"
  • "Why would you even want that feature to work?! You are the problem!"
  • "IDK, I haven't used a graphic user interface since 1994"

(honorable mention: "RTFM" - I have noticed a radical drop in RTFM posts in the past decade :)

Confession: I kinda like just plain old #debian #xfce

It's not my personal go to distro. But it feels amazing and solid, even on a crap laptop like this. (HP stream with a Celeron and emmc)

#Github project from #Nix is encouraging to close stale issues although the issue still persists. However, nobody did seem to work on it within 3 months.

Although I understand that there needs to be some process of handling long-running issues that don´t get fixed, I'm not sure if this is a good thing. 🤔

Background (but independent from the strategy above): some #xfce panel plugins are not working when installed via #HomeManager, visible if installed at #NixOS-level:

As I slowly work on my own folder/image browser (to scratch my own itches) I always marvel at how hard it is to make a #GUI file manager like #Thunar (I'm on #FLOSS #Manjaro #XFCE). There are so many details, each a world on its own, like, selection, sorting, instant search, preview... innumerable mouse and keyboard interactions and shortcuts...

Some think is crap and anything open source is crap and badly written. Some think is hard to learn. In that case, my Father must be a supergenius for learning how to use at over 40 after years being away from technology and even not having a smartphone running . The old PC we had at home could not run so I installed Debian on it and he has been using , the desktop environment PDF reader and few other things for past 2 years.

I really love late-90s productivity software aesthetics and usability. This is a screenshot of XFCE on Debian, using themes and tweaks from the Chicago95 package - "a rendition of everyone's favorite 1995 Microsoft operating system for Linux." Here's how it's done: https://jkdata.de/jka/docs/chicago-style.html
