While I am contemplating dual booting with again here are some of my old desktops. Because as we all know showing your desktop screenshots of Linux is mandatory on all social networks.

Kali Linux 2024.2 is now available for download. It features GNOME 46, enhanced Xfce, 18 new security tools, and 64-bit time_t transition.

Omg #KDE is soooo good. If their design philosophy was a bit more #GNOME or Apple like, I would literally switch. But I love my Berlin Gnomies, so running both it is.

Btw, I started to rework the Gnome pattern on openSUSE Tumbleweed in my free time and really reference #Aeon :D

My main problem with KDE is QT, because it’s so Cpp heavy and hard to integrate with other languages, unlike GTK. Maybe #XFCE could be interesting for me, now that they have a Wayland story and I learned about XApps 😼

@janvhs @dgchrt @matt @sovtechfund Redhat (IBM), Canonical, and Suse are all either billion-dollar or hundred-million-dollar corporations.

matt,

@aral @janvhs @dgchrt Please remove me from this thread. I think it would be appropriate to remove @sovtechfund as well. This argument has already been had. I'm already doing what I can, and so is STF. I, for one, don't want the noise of rehashing this argument.

I liked the old 'Opera' so much that it was also developed for Linux right from the start.

When Opera was then sold to a Chinese company and Vivaldi was launched, Vivaldi was of course mine.

Small detail about #LocOS you will notice only from a remote session. One core has very high usage for a simple screensaver.

It seems it’s not properly going to sleep afterwards. Maybe some ACPI issue or maybe because it has auto login and no auto lock. It’s a machine intentionally in free access.

For now I just set the saver as just blank.

For anyone looking for a stable and easy to use (Desktop Environment) that just works:

Give it a try! 😎

The project and all it's dev's and maintainers do a great job at producing a working desktop that is a breeze to use. :xfce:

I would say XFCE and MATE - the Caja (From MATE) is just so much better for my preferences - but I also use Thunar (from XFCE) for its 'bulk rename' feature :)

jhx,
@jhx@fosstodon.org avatar

@vermaden
Mate is good as well. Used it before briefly.
Caja is a great filemanager!
The bulk rename option in Thunar sure is cool 🙂

Rant:

Had a 27" 2k IPS panel... then a 32" 4k ultrawide followed....

Now I'm back on a 24" FHD panel.

Why?

I do not need much more. The resolution is totally fine for me.
I rather work with workspaces in #Xfce now than having 100 windows open on one.

Little side effect.
Before my monitor (Both) used about 40W.... now down to 10W
It is truly amazing how much energy one can conserve with making, to me, small changes.

@jhx@fosstodon.org avatar

Small rant:

I use three monitors at work and now use two at home... which in itself is great.
But there is something that nags me.
When dealing with a multi monitor setup I tend to switch my focus too often between monitors. I ask myself if that is the way to go.
Thinking about rather using one and handling all the windows in different #Xfce workspaces - since switching is easy via keyboard.
Maybe this is just me... but I kinda feel a little disorganized - if that makes sense.

A very nice launcher (and much more) is rofi.
I use it with to quickly run a application. It is easy to use and the defaults are sane.
Bin it to a keyboard shortcut of your liking and it will be your best buddy soon 😎

Isn't Alt-f2 enough to launch application?
I used to use Synapse as launcher not sure if it is still available... 🤔

jhx,

@freezr
Sure, works as well. Rofi for me though is faster.

I spent a good chunk of the day slimming down my Debian install on the . I moved from (and uninstalled) to . I wholesale uninstalled many preinstalled apps (such as Libre Office, Emacs, Bluez, and much, much more).

I installed and I gotta say, it is running smooth. I am even able to run with out maxing out the CPU or RAM!

All in all, its been a good day.

I love the bing daily wallpapers, I especially love that they seem to always have a related wallpaper if it's a UN recognised 'day'. For example, today is Bee Day!

I have a script that can automatically download and set the bing daily wallpaper on my gitlab https://gitlab.com/tripplehelix/bing-wallpaper

if you install #Debian with #XFCE, you get the xfce4-goodies package, which means you get xfburn. LOL, CD burning. I don't even have an optical drive in this machine.

I think maybe 12 with is literally perfect for me. And that's without doing anything in terminals, only clicking around in GUI settings. I didn't even have to install any additional packages.

apgarcia,
@apgarcia@fosstodon.org avatar

@tulpa Debian 12 with Cinnamon is what I'm currently doing. Cool thing about Debian is that it's easy to try different desktop environments by choosing at the login screen.

tulpa,
@tulpa@fosstodon.org avatar

@apgarcia I had a problem doing that recently. I had MATE and XFCE installed at the same time, and the MATE components being present seemed to make trouble for XFCE. Specifically, I had theme and sound issues.
