I use #KaiOS :) But I have an ebook reader running #Android with #epaper display. But that's not my mobile phone.

Edit:

And the only reason it's Android, is because there is no good hardware on the market running else OS.

Oh Hi KaiOS user! Do you also use #Matrix?

Edit: I use my #BOOX #Leaf for cab booking, food ordering and such these, too :)

yeah and I'm developing a #Matrix client for KaiOS :)

The Event Horizon Telescope org. just released this swirling "image" of Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole (SMBH) at the center of our galaxy. The spiral lines in the composite image is based on measurements of polarized light emitted by surrounding plasma and highlights the magnetic field around the black hole.

The spiral structure is a result of the strong magnetic field around the black hole, which is caused and shaped by the swirling plasma.

Interesting. Can it be seen with casual telescopes?

Hello contributors out there!

There is a call here for small projects by for free and open source hardware, software and open access scientific papers. Perhaps you could get some fund to port your favorite Linux mobile distribution to some phone?

I am looking at you contributors, too.

#Plasma6Mobile on #OnePlus6 - #postmarketOS edge.

Not much to say yet, but it feels quite smooth and I love the mode dark wallpaper.

@linmob

It is beautiful(the colours and everything). Hopefully, One day I will install on on my phone. But now I haven't got enough resources(time and effort) to port different stock apps to it to have free alternatives of them.

I think needs its dedicated phone. A company which puts resources into having a phone not porting pmOS to existing hardware.

@DrewNaylor

Unfortunately, Librem 5 is too expensive. I can't pay 1k to buy a phone. Plus it's not a feature phone. I'm a #KaiOS #Nokia 800 Tough user here.

What's an IPO? Pinephone hasn't got good specs IMO.

hmm I think Librem's GPU is much better than Pinephone's. isn't it?

If someone wants to become a web developer, and they plan to learn HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for 100 hours, how should that time be divided between these three languages?

farooqkz,
@farooqkz@blackrock.city avatar

@simevidas
IMO, the question you are asking is wrong. If you want to learn, choose an interesting idea and do a project.

The tech web right now:

  • Spatial video
  • Apple, Vision Pro, VR
  • AI, ChatGPT, Stable diffusion
  • Deep learning
  • Machine learning
  • Reinventing the wheel

When it should be about:

  • Bring back the web
  • Open source
  • Fediverse, ActivityPub, social web
  • Proper automation (not with AI)
  • Learning new things

Some think #FOSS is crap and anything open source is crap and badly written. Some think #Linux is hard to learn. In that case, my Father must be a supergenius for learning how to use #Debian at over 40 after years being away from technology and even not having a smartphone running #Android. The old PC we had at home could not run #Windows so I installed Debian on it and he has been using #LibreOffice, #Firefox the #XFCE desktop environment #Atril PDF reader and few other things for past 2 years.

farooqkz,
@farooqkz@blackrock.city avatar

There are only two main reasons he would want to install #Windows on his new PC once he gets one:

  1. A crappy gov website accepts rich text when typed in MS Word and copy/pasted to their rich text box. (Didn't work with LibreOffice, didn't investigate why).

  2. He fears because all other computers other than his computer run Windows, he won't be able to use them as he spends most of his time with Linux.

farooqkz,
@farooqkz@blackrock.city avatar

BTW, imagine if it wasn't for FOSS, this old PC we have at home would be sold for its metal parts as garbage. Where are the environmentalists?

If he decides to have Linux rather than Windows, a small #SBC will be enough for him for few years. It's cheaper, consumes less power and it's also kinda portable unlike a full blown PC. And because of less heat produced, one can predict it'll live for much longer due to less damage done to electronic parts.

uses a big number of stuff in their tablets. I first thought it's just the which they don't release the source code. But I've realized they are using many more FOSS stuff. Like the apps from which are not but if they were, legally, BOOX had to free their source code, too. One might argue what is the difference when they don't release the source codes. The differences come up when BOOX is in a court.

farooqkz,
@farooqkz@blackrock.city avatar

I'm not trashing my BOOX device. It's a useful one. But I hope to switch to #LinuxMobile like #postmarketOS in the future. I've realized there is no app I need and is #Android specific.

Thank you so much! Another person, @elsewhere0789, suggested the same in private. I've installed koreader on Android but it is not much user friendly. But I'm looking forward to buy a #Kobo #ereader install #postmarketOS on it and install this #koreader on it.

But that would be about a year from now as I'm having too many technical debts

I'm thinking, a very basic #WM written in #rust which loads koreader and a #gemini browser.

I dislike touch typing. I want a real keyboard for my 7" tablet. What do you suggest?

Is a mechanical keyboard at this size possible? I am thinking about an accessory which connects through the OTG.

Edit: I want something which gets attached to my tablet like Blackberry keyboards.

Thank you so much. But none of these seem to be my ideal keyboard :(

Do you know anyone experiencing the mini PiQWERTY Keyboard? From what I can tell, the typing experience with its older bro, the first version, won't be good due to the type of switches they use.

I've been using Diaspora and the Friendica for a while—now decided to give Mastodon a go!

Also trying to get my friends to join the (though that's a slow process 😕).
