Does anyone use @mxlinux without XFCE?

I like the distro, but I'd rather be running @i3wm

Any issues doing so? Do you lose anything by not running ?

People keep bringing up the very tired “Linux on the desktop” meme to dismiss the Fediverse.

But a meme is just a meme.

In the real world, Linux dominates.

Your phone? Probably Linux. Your car’s infotainment system? Linux. Your router? Linux.

Chromebook? Linux.

Windows has a Linux Subsystem too.

Linux has won.

The “Linux on the desktop” naysayers don’t even realize it.

The Fediverse should be so lucky.

People would be LUCKY to discover the many desktops Linux has available

#GNOME #KDE (#Plasma) #XFCE #LXDE #Unity #i3 #awesomewm #ratpoison #enlightenment whatever #system76 is cooking up

that doesn't even cover the file managers, terminals, IDEs, browsers, media players, games (so many games!)

of course, I'm the crazy one for suggesting any of this.. But I've only used Linux desktops exclusively since ~1998, so what do i know?!

My personal Linux desktop environment tier list after two years of , based on overall friendliness and ease of customization:

  1. Cinnamon
  2. GNOME
  3. Xfce
  4. KDE
  5. Pantheon

What’s yours?

RockyC,
@RockyC@fosstodon.org avatar

@mp362 Give me an #Xfce panel calendar extension that actually shows my appointments and it’ll likely jump to my number 2 spot.

sjosjo,
@sjosjo@mas.to avatar

@mp362 @RockyC Thing with Nemo, for me, was that I couldn’t get used to the sorting options of (dot) files and folders. But then again #Linux allows you to plug in any file manager you want! It just baffles me how much good #FOSS software is out there.

#LMDE6 will also be released this summer based on #debian Bookworm. I just wonder when this will be the flagship distro (in favor of current Ubuntu-based #LinuxMint).

Gotta try #xfce as well one of these days. Where did I put that USB stick 🥳

RockyC,
@RockyC@fosstodon.org avatar

@sjosjo @mp362 I just installed Mint #Xfce yesterday, and I got to say, it’s really nice. I am able to customize it without too much trouble, and in some ways it’s more flexible than #Cinnamon.
The only thing that holds it back in my opinion is the lack of quality add-ons and widgets. Cinnamon has a much better selection, and Cinnamon’s selection is paltry compared to GNOME.

Time to install #ArchLinux with #XFCE and theme it either #Windows95 or #WindowsXP :blobcatevil: :arch_linux:

#xfce :xfce: is so far working great.

As much as I loved Budgie on my @fedora 38 install, I had to go back to my familiar @xfce setup... It just works.

Let's start off the new week with a quick Vivaldi on #Desktop tip!
Get the browser looking and working how you want with Toolbar Customization.

Just right click your toolbar and select Customize Toolbar to move around buttons, spaces and even web panels.

You can even add new buttons based on your Command Chains to for example switch to a specific Workspace with just a click.

tripplehelix,
@tripplehelix@fosstodon.org avatar

@Vivaldi I see the system buttons; close, minimise and maximise don't adhear to the system. At least on #xfce. Was wondering if there was a way for us to customise these buttons to make them match the system.

I find it strange that #BlueskySocial wanted to create their own protocol just because the existing ones weren't "good enough". Who's to say everything will always stay the same? We've been having development in every major protocols throughout the history of the Internet, look at http for example.

No, I think they know they won't get enough money or control in any other way than to develop their own. The openness is just a facade here. #ActivityPub #Fediverse

adelgado,
@adelgado@eu.mastodon.green avatar

@rolle This is not uncommon in #FOSS. People create a new thing instead of improving an existing. It doesn't necessary has to be bad. See #Gnome, #KDE, #I3, #XFCE, etc. It might make progress slow to have people working in different things for the same porpoise but it might also bring new benefits and choice. I'm not sure if it's good or bad, but it's how it is

I didn't realize just how much I missed #KDE #Plasma.

No hatin' on #XFCE, but man, this is such smooth, clean, elegant desktop.
It adapts to my crazy brain almost as well (possibly better *) than #i3wm.

*The only thing I don't like about i3 is that floating windows always float above tiled windows. It would be nice if they could be brought above and below freely, but they're on a layer that's permanently above anything tiled. Minor niggle, though.

Back to #KDE #Plasma.
The occasional bugs "bugged" me, so I went to #xfce, but I found its limited keyboard controls... limiting.
I tried #Gnome for about five minutes and ran screaming for the hills. :D

What are people’s thoughts on distro/window manager/desktop I should go with? I’ve used Linux for many years but mostly server & command line stuff. Much of that time I’ve used a Mac to access stuff. However I have now got a 2019 Thinkpad X1 to play around with. Casual type use, out of the office, maybe kept at side of armchair etc. #manjaro #fedora #kde #gnome #xfce #linux #Homelab
