#ClimateDiary Saturday morning I was wondering whether people I know in real life even see these kinds of graphs. I decided to find out by sharing it in WhatsApp groups I am in (not all but was quite brave - included colleagues, family, etc) posting it with this message.
Entirely unscientific, badly worded etc, but I am so glad I did! I learned a number of interesting things:
In every group, 70-90 % of people had never seen this graph and do not normally see these graphs. 1/x
2/x #ClimateDiary I do think most people, whilst aware of #ClimateChange in general, are actually pretty oblivious to what is going on at the moment, in the #Antarctic and elsewhere.
I just did a mini-one person survey and asked my family this question: where in the world are #FlashFloods in last few days - right now?
First person didn't know of any. Still awaiting answers from rest of family.
Here in #Vermont, we had 2 of our hottest days on record last week, followed by a month’s worth of rain that fell last night (in the span of less than 24 hrs).
“Governor Phil Scott declared a state of emergency on Sunday, July 9 ahead of expected flash flooding on Monday, July 10.
It's important to be prepared to stay safe. Here are some tips:
◾ Monitor the latest weather and water level reports.
◾ Register for Vermont Alert to get the latest local emergency notifications at https://vem.vermont.gov/vtalert
◾ Have a plan for your evacuation route if rising water is approaching…” #VTwx#Flooding
◾ Find road closure information on the New England 511 website or on Twitter at @511VT.
◾ Never drive or walk through flooded roads or areas.
◾ If you live in a flood-prone area, move valuables from your basement…
1/3 FROM Vermont State Police on FB: Serious, life-threatening flooding is occurring today across much of Vermont. Emergency crews have conducted rescues in multiple communities. About two dozen state roads are closed as of 10AM. Flash flood warnings are in effect from the Massachusetts line to the Canadian border.
If you can, please stay home today. However, if floodwaters are approaching your home, leave immediately. Make an evacuation plan before it becomes necessary.
2/2 Vermont State Police: “…Do not drive or walk through floodwaters. The water can obscure washouts, carry debris and strong currents, and be deeper than it appears. Turn around, don’t drown.
Continue monitoring local media, the National Weather Service, and sign up for VT ALERT through Vermont Emergency Management if you have not done so already to receive real-time alerts by phone and/or email…”
3/3 From Vermont State Police: “…(This video shows floodwaters pouring over the dam this morning on the Ottauquechee River near Simon Pearce in Quechee.)
Yo #Vermont! Plz be aware of this. A life threatening event could be setting up. Be sure to contact any elderly family members if they're in the hi-lited areas.
Well… National Weather Service says that over the 12 hours, those of us in #Vermont should be seeing a LOT of rain! We are up at the top of the red zone in this map.
There's also the added problem for #tourism that (due to #RonDeSantis ) many legal valid #DriversLicenses from FIVE STATES are no longer recognized as valid in the state of #Florida. Drivers from those states have legitimate reason to not come visit.
Visiting Montpelier, #Vermont, yesterday around dinner time, we drove by “Hippie Chickpea” and HAD to stop! 😃 I mean.. it’s just so on-brand for our quirky and fun little state!
We had some great chicken gyros, beef gyros, and of course falafel. 🙂 Highly recommended if you like this type of food!
Otter Creek Falls in Vergennes, #Vermont. Otter Creek is the longest waterway entirely contained in Vermont. From Vergennes to Lake Champlain, Otter Creek is fully navigable and Vergennes was a shipyard in the early 1800s. #WaterfallWednesday#waterfall#52LakeChamplain
Doing some free #BikeRepair at a local special ed school. They have 14 bikes for the students to ride. Most of them have bent rear derailleurs so you know the kids are having a blast! #Cycling#Vermont
