Has anyone here used U-Haul UBox service to move stuff recently? I am looking for the best way to get the last of my stuff from my mom's house in NJ to WA.

I used them about a decade ago to move here. It was a terrible experience, mostly because they had no tracking system. Unfortunately, they're very cost competitive for the amount I need to move and they service both ends of the move. Have they gotten any better since 2012?

annejefferson,

@kc2ihx Not recently, but I've had multiple very good experiences with ABF U-Pack cubes and have never heard negatives about that service.

Missisquoi River almost flooding, July 12, 2023. Major flood impacts were in the 2 watersheds south of the Missisquoi, but the water was still impressively high and turbid here as we passed by.

experienced devastating earlier this week. These were the largest floods since 1927 and many communities, businesses, and residents are dealing with huge amounts of damage. Areas seeing incredible water and mud impacts include Ludlow, Barre, and Montpelier. Cleanup and recovery has begun and will continue for weeks, months, and years. Want to ?

annejefferson,

Want to help or other impacted areas? Remember that giving money is better than giving stuff, because it allows affected communities to get what they need and maybe to support local businesses in the process. The counterpoint to this is if you are seeing specific lists of needed items (e.g., muck boots, hand tools) and you have a way to get it to the organization seeking those items.

annejefferson,

Want to help or other impacted areas? If you are coming to volunteer, be aware of continuing road closures and damage, and consider overnighting somewhere with fewer impacts. As always, the best approach is to coordinate with local groups who already know what help is needed and where rather than trying to figure out something new.

So many, many reasons this is a terrible idea….

Just wait until the first high water.

Thinks looked pretty hairy for several #Vermont #dams overnight, with possible emergency releases that would have caused really severe #flooding in already impacted downstream communities. Fortunately, this seem a bit calmer this morning. Still very dangerous conditions with continuing rain. https://www.vermontpublic.org/live-updates/vermont-experiencing-significant-flash-flooding#some-relief-at-wrightsville-ball-mountain-and-townshend-dams #flood #floods

Not good. This is the main stem of the Winooski. Since records here began in 1912, it’s only gotten to this volume (15,600 cfs) 3 times, most recently 1936. We’re 1000 cfs and over 1 ft higher than 2011 (Irene).

And it’s still raining.

annejefferson,

@whknott I just don’t know the answer, I’m too new here. But it’s scary.

annejefferson, to random

’s emergency operations center has been evacuated due to threat of flooding. Good that they upgraded after Irene so facility will likely be undamaged this time, but needing to evacuate because no one can get in or out is still a slight (and foreseeable) flaw for an emergency center. https://vtdigger.org/2023/07/10/officials-evacuate-vermonts-emergency-operations-center-in-waterbury/

Southern Vermont has been hammered by over 7" of rainfall (and then flooding) in places, but now it's going to get worse in north central Vermont, including the flood prone Winooski River valley, where floods are already impacting communities. https://vtdigger.org/2023/07/10/rainfall-totals-exceed-7-inches-in-southern-vermont-as-forecasters-eye-rising-rivers/

This figure is from a newly released opportunity. What pivotal partner is missing from this example diagram?!

annejefferson,

@luis_in_brief https://www.grants.gov/web/grants/view-opportunity.html?oppId=348990 Sure. But it isn't necessary to spot the truly appalling indigenous erasure happening in that figure and doesn't do anything in the text to fix the problem.

annejefferson,

@luis_in_brief It's an intriguing solicitation! Bends my brain a bit to think so big!

annejefferson,

@Stressrelated @geographile Ding ding. we have a winner.

I sincerely hope this was the worst sort of copy editing error, but it's still so so terrible.

Thing I just wrote:
"No one ever cried over a canceled meeting."

That may be too general, but is certainly true for faculty/administrators facing hours of meetings per day. Unless it's a meeting with a student who we know is struggling, in which case we might get angsty.
What other caveats do I need to add?

In the midst of hiring a lab tech (staff) and post-doc (not considered staff). Interesting to note the differences in the institutional process and consider the strengths and weaknesses of both. Also, this is yet another thing we do as academics without much training in how to do it well. At least my friendly HR person lets me ask all sorts of questions so I can smoothly get to good, equitable outcomes.

Otter Creek Falls in Vergennes, . Otter Creek is the longest waterway entirely contained in Vermont. From Vergennes to Lake Champlain, Otter Creek is fully navigable and Vergennes was a shipyard in the early 1800s.
