The farm my kid gets CSA produce from in MA has completely flooded, ruining everything that was grown for summer, as well as the fall. Climate change is ALREADY HAPPENING.
@StillIRise1963 One of our co-op farms here in Burlington #Vermont is in what we call the Intervale, a low-lying area that is essentially a floodplain for the Winooski river. Farmers spent yesterday desperately trying to harvest as much usable produce as possible before the river jumps its banks.
The thing that REALLY scares me though is that Canada has lost it's entire summer wheat harvest, and the midwest US spring/summer wheat is under performing.
Each of these anomalies creates new risks, threatening human health and biodiversity. Yet with disasters piling up and headlines blurring together, there is another profoundly dangerous risk: apathy.
#Montpelier#VT this afternoon. The water is slowly starting to recede. The smell is something else; a mix of sewage and heating oil. Fire alarms ringing in buildings cause an eerie atmosphere.
How to help #Vermont#flood recovery. I was there for Tropical Storm Irene, homes were washed away, communities were cut off, and lives were lost. This appears to be worse.
From MyNBC5 New York and Vermont - “See rainfall totals in Vermont, New York following heavy rainfall, flooding” Note: Ad and pop up heavy. Just keep scrolling to towards the bottom. The totals are astonishing.

#montpelier, the capital of #Vermont, has water most of the way over the ground floors of its downtown, and the dam upstream could overtop or fail. There has been extreme #flooding in Europe this year, central Africa, New England, New York State, New Zealand, where else? And extreme heat, drought, sea warming. The El Niño coming is on top of already warm seas globally and an unusually warm tropical Atlantic.
Winooski River at Essex Junction has reached major flood stage (18 ft) and is only going to crest this afternoon. If it hits 20 feet, flooding is expected to be widespread all the way to Lake Champlain. The discharge is 31,100 cubic feet per second - the previous max, set in 1931, was 6,940 ft^3/s. Median is 692 ft^3/s. #vermont#climate#vtwx#flooding#vtflood
From Vermont Public on FB: “The cities of Montpelier and Barre have issued emergency health orders closing their downtowns until at least noon Tuesday.
A flash flood warning remains in effect until 7:15 a.m. for Barre, Montpelier and South Barre.”
Not good. This is the main stem of the Winooski. Since records here began in 1912, it’s only gotten to this volume (15,600 cfs) 3 times, most recently 1936. We’re 1000 cfs and over 1 ft higher than 2011 (Irene).
@whknott@annejefferson Years ago I used to swim/photograph around the Union Village Dam. Some beautiful pothole rocks along the Ompompanusuc river there. The dam itself is a huge structure towering over an empty basin. An Army Corp of Engineers project for flood control. I’m sure they filled that basin and kept that water out of the CT River now.
I knew what it was for, but lacking 100 or 1000 year floods it always seemed odd in those days. We need more of those. #vermont
Revs. Jeannie and Alaina are ministers at Earthfire Abbey: a Trans and Queer led interfaith intentional community. Due to the recent laws passed in TN, they are moving the Abbey to Vermont and expanding their new home and land into a refuge for other trans folk. Once established there, they will be providing space for their fellow trans refugees.
